Many of today's Staten Island commuters hadn't yet entered the work force in the 1970s, when it first became clear that the borough needed a third bus depot.

Requests for a new facility grew into angry demands of desperation over the years, but yesterday they inched closer to reality when the shovels hit the ground at the site of the future Charleston Bus Annex.

Gov. Eliot Spitzer was among the many elected officials who joined MTA brass for the much-anticipated ceremony at the Arthur Kill site tucked between Veterans Road West and the Kreischer Mansion.
