Thankfully for today's transit historians, the "juice buffs" of many decades ago took countless photos of the "Green Hornets" in earnest!
MANY rare and outstanding photos on this page!
*(note one "Green Hornet" interior photo depicting the unusual "ship's telegraph" fare register)

| The Chicago PCC's were nice. Wonder what the real story was? When there are public funds involved, anything is possible and no one is held accountable. |

I don't think we'll ever learn of ALL the factors that were involved regarding the early demise of the PCCs in Chicago, but, I would think it would be safe to say that the political climate in Chicago at that time indeed played a sizeable role in the ultimate outcome.
The CTA's "Green Hornets", like PE's double-ended PCCs, were indeed unique, and were quite distinct when compared to the "standard" PCCs of that era.
To this very day, some enthusiasts/historians refer to the CTA's iconic 6000 series "L" cars as "Rapid Transit PCCs" or "PCC-type Rapid Transit Cars".
When one considers that the CTA was still operating streetcars in the early 1950s that were then over 40 years old, it DOES make you scratch your head, wondering why the CTA ordered hundreds of new PCCs, only to scrap them a scant 10 years later, instead of ordering new buses, thus avoiding such wanton waste........

Excellent collection of color photos of various types of Chicago streetcars, during their last years of operation.
Interesting that, in Chicago, Peter Witts were known as "Sedans", and car houses were "stations".
Also, a number of interesting "then and now" photos........so much has vanished forever, like the streetcars themselves.........

| Yep, a lot of interesting transit stuff went on in Chicago. However, that's a city I never really got into. I think I have only one book devoted exclusively to Chicago in my library. I've only been there once, for a convention, but didn't have time to go ride the El, unfortunately. This was in the 90's so all the "good" stuff was already gone. |

Bus-wise, well into the 1960s, the CTA was still rostering a VERY diverse fleet of buses; CTA operated ex-CMCCo Old Looks, Fishbowls, Flex New Looks, propane-powered TWIN COACHES, WHITES, MACKS, and ACF-BRILLS.
Then, too, there were the trolleybuses, featuring coaches of several makes.
My last visit was back in 1986; I got to take several rides on the iconic 6000s on the "L"; I was really looking forward to riding the "Skokie Swift" (then utilizing catenary), but the line was OOS for repairs the week I was oit there there.
Recall, this line utilized a small section of the old North Shore's row, which ended all service in 1963.............

NYO,
You've done better than me in Chicago! Sounds like they had it all at one time or another. |

Recall, Chicago also had the interurbans running on the "L" into the Loop; the CA&E, in the mid-1950s was cut back to a transfer point with the "L" at Forest Park, before all service ended in 1957.
The North Shore's trains utilized the Loop until the railroad was abandoned in 1963.............

Like New York, Chicago also lost a number of "L" lines over the years (EXCELLENT selection of historical photos here, some featuring buses and streetcars, also the interurbans!)
www.thetrolleydodger.com/2021/06/30/chicagos-lost-ls/
(I have the book highlighted here in my transit library; EXCELLENT little book, WELL worth the reasonable price!)
Note, also, photos of the long-gone Wells Street Terminal, used by the "L" trains as well as the interurbans; man, what a SHOW that had to have been!)
