EXCELLENT photo of a work-weary SURFACE Old Look; SURFACE buses without the familiar "RIDE THE SURFACE WAY" slogan over the windows look (at least to me) quite "unfinished".

Still, it is always most refreshing to see a REAL bus, instead of a huge milk carton or a giant caterpillar......... Wink

"NYO"

["RIDE THE SURFACE WAY"]

Evidently, the photo was taken after 1957 - the first full year as Fifth Avenue Coach Lines-owned Surface Transit. When they relettered such rolling stock "Ride The Surface Way" was among those elements that went out the window.

"The Coliseum" reference picked my interest, since I think of the former TBTA owned property at Columbus Circle...didn't know about this older one.

Traildriver… the Coliseum depot was/is located in the Bronx. It was a former sports arena that was converted to a repair shop and depot. It was acquired by Surface Transportation in 1947.

Here is a link for the Coliseum Arena…

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_Coliseum_(1928)

Note: It states that the New York City Transit Authority (NYCTA) acquired the property in 1947… The NYCTA never acquired the property, however, MaBSTOA acquired the property in 1962 when the City took over Fifth Avenue Coach and Surface Transit.

Thanks for the info…
If you feel up to it, perhaps you should correct that wiki article…🙂

I have read that when Surface had The Coliseum, they used it as a central maintenance facility. Does anybody out there know when (after the takeover in 1962) the OA turned it into a working garage providing service?

November 5, 1962. It was after the ex-Surface Central Bronx depot, located at 126th Street and Second Avenue in upper Manhattan, was turned over to the Transit Authority and made the depot for their Manhattan Bus Division (then consisting of routes M-1 Madison-Chambers [now M22]; M-3 49th-50th Crosstown [later M27, now M50]; M-7 65th Street [later M29, now M66]; M-11 York Avenue [now M31]; M-13 Journal Building [discontinued 1966, briefly revived in 1970-71]; and M-15 First and Second Avenues), replacing two ex-East Side/Comprehensive Omnibus depots/garages on East 100th and 108th Streets closer to the FDR Drive. One or two routes heretofore assigned to Central Bronx went to Kingsbridge, all the rest to Coliseum.

It should also be noted that on that same 1962 day, two ex-Surface routes once assigned to Amsterdam - M-103 59th Street Crosstown and M-106 42nd Street Crosstown - were transferred to the ex-NYCO depot at 54th Street and Ninth Avenue.
