.........just learned that NJT has redirected six bus lines from the Philadelphia GREYHOUND terminal to Camden; this change will be permanent during the Spring.

NJT states that the reason for this is that, since the GREYHOUND terminal was remodeled, it compromises the safety of NJT riders.

GREYHOUND has not (as yet) responded to email inquiries regarding this......

Since my original "alert", I've read online comments that this situation might have been avoided if, in past years, Philadelphia had consented to build a "union" bus terminal, along the lines of the PABT......

Also have read that, many years ago, PSNJ/TNJ used the GREYHOUND and TRAILWAYS terminals, or, "wandered around in a loop" in the downtown area.......

I recall back in the late '60's, Public Service primary terminal in Philly was the classic old Union Bus Terminal on 13th and Filbert where all the routes operated from. In addition, the Atlantic City, Cape May, Fort Dix/McGuire AFB buses also stopped at the nearby Trailways Terminal at 13th and Arch, as well as the more distant Penn Center underground Greyhound Terminal at 17th and Market. At the time, PS and EGL ran a summertime pooled thru bus from Pittsburgh to Atlantic City, with a driver change at Philly. This bus only operated from the Greyhound Terminal, IIRC...

What is interesting is that Greyhound also pooled with Public Services rival, Lincoln Transit, on a summertime thru bus from Montreal to Atlantic City, changing drivers at New York City.

traildriver:

I have 1964 LINCOLN TRANSIT ("Lincoln Limited") tt from 1964 (4104 on the cover!)

In the footnotes, there is a "PS" designation that denotes that a particular run is "via Public Service".

A number of PABT-AC runs were designated:

"TURNPIKE EXPRESS"

"PARKWAY & TURNPIKE NON-STOP"

A box notice also announces that 'EVERY BUS CARRIES PACKAGE EXPRESS SHIPMENTS TO AND FROM AGENCY POINTS"

A stop was also made in Weehawken, but no location is given as to just where this stop was located.......

Love it! Very Happy

My first bus employer, Safeway Trails, had purchased Quaker City, and inherited its 'Exit 4' commuters. At the time, the commuter's boarded at the old Circle Diner in Maple Shade, where NJ 73 and 38 interchanged. When Safeway bought the line, they built the current 4 bay terminal and park and ride lot, behind the (at the time) new "Moorestown" Holiday Inn, next to Exit 4 of the Turnpike.

Safeway inherited Quaker City's local rights between Philly and Atlantic City, which continued to provide "token" competition to Public Service's frequent schedules, right up to the end of regulation.

In Manhattan, Quaker City utilized All American Bus Lines terminal on 41st and 42nd streets, while Safeway used the Dixie Hotel Terminal until all moved into The Port...
In Philly, Quaker City had the 13th and Arch Street location, while Safeway used the 13th and Filbert Union Bus Terminal. After the purchase, Safeway built a new terminal on the old Quaker City property, and moved out of the Union Bus Terminal.

traildriver:

You mentioned the Dixie Hotel; recall that the basement bus terminal was equipped with a turntable for the buses (now THAT had to be a SHOW!) Shocked

There's a lot of interesting "urban archeology" photos on this page; be sure not to miss the 1940's photo showing the SHORT LINE Yellow entering the terminal....... Wink

Yes...we have discussed the old Dixie Hotel bus terminal before...

One thing that sparked my memory, was the photo of that "The Short Line" bus. The name, "Short Line", is now only used by Coach USA component Hudson Transit Lines which serves Bergen County, NJ, on its routes to upstate New York. But the name 'Short Line' goes way back in history to the 1920's, and was an early association of independent carrier's that strived to form a larger 'network'...a precursor to what became the National Trailways Bus System in 1935.

When I entered the bus business in 1968, there were three completely different carrier's that still used the Short Line name. The largest was Hudson Transit, but prior to becoming Bonanza Bus Line, George Sage's original carrier was The Short Line of Rhode Island. It became Bonanza when he acquired Super Service Coach (originally Providence Arrow Line). The third company was lesser known...The Short Line of Pennsylvania. This carrier at one time was a major player on the New York/Washington route, and in fact, Safeway Trails inherited that route from them. But they remained in business, but by 1968 only had one small route remaining...a daily turn from Philadelphia to Rehoboth Beach, DE.
