The pantographs look gigantic, and on Russian trolleybuses the poles look extra long. I wonder whether the wires are higher than in the US.

Agreed; the pans and bows used in Euro street railway operations (then and now) always looked exceptionally large, as well as "exotic".

Virtually all British traction operations used poles; Leeds and Glasgow used bows.

Oddly, Blackpool's cars had "towers" on the roofs on which a short pole sprouted.

Speaking of wire heights, look the at the height of the overhead wires in London, for both the cars and the trolleybuses, which, of course, were all double-deck.....

Just found this picture of the interior of a vintage Hague PCC, showing the operator's area.

Note the pedal controls, typical, of course, on all PCC's.......

A bit off-topic here, but I wanted to share the following link:

This is an excellent collection of vintage London trolleybus photos; though the trolleybuses were, of course, double-deck, note how long the poles were on the buses, and, also, the height of the overhead.......

Though the now-defunct, luxurious "ORIENT EXPRESS" was not a Russian train, it still evokes an historical, intriguing, exciting aura of that part of the world......

In the July/August (1989) issue of the old "ElectricLInes" , there is an excellent article, "THE TRATRA STORY".

There is a great deal of technical info here, as well as excellent photos.

TATRA's first double-truck, all-electric cars were the T-3's, which was being developed in 1950.

Oddly, I could find nothing on pedal controls, per se; the text does state, in detail, the propulsion and braking hardware.

It is also noted in the article, that, the "T-1"-series cars were based on PCC technology; the first 150 cars were built under license via the Transit Research Corporation, then the holder of PCC patents.

Also, while TATRA did not use the total PCC package, the "T3" still used a version of the PCC "B3" truck and Westinghouse PCC controllers.....

It is also interesting to note that TATRA introduced the first all-steel cars in 1924; these were all single-truck units.

Through 1931, these cars were produced, with several changes and increases in length; in Prague, for instance thee car, popular with riders, ran until 1972.

Nearly 300 trailers were built to run with these cars, beginning in 1930; all were equipped with center doors.

They were characterized by a considerable "heft", and, because of their unusual shape, were called "Krasin" cars; Krasin was the noteworthy Soviet icebreaker, which, in 1928, assisted in the successful rescue of the Nobile expedition,, whose airship had crashed at the North Pole......

I've included this link of Prague trolleybuses for the interesting variety of rolling stock; of particular interested is preserved TATRA "T400"-type* trolleybus, which clearly has the distinctive, classic look of a 1950's Soviet-era vehicle......
