|
|
Fifth Avenue Coach model TDH-5106, fleet numbers 2605-262644 of 1958 and 2645-2694 of 1959.
These buses were unique for their exterior color schemes but principally their protruding destination sign box containing fluorescent lighting equipment.
Interior wise, the buses had padded seats in a unique color combination and a lounge horse-shoe shape rear seat. As well as fluorescent lights, push out rear doors.
The driver was kept “safe” by a waist high partition door as seen in the photos (note the Grant fare box)
Besides repainting, one of the first things that MaBSTOA did was to remove the partition and change the Grants for Johnson K-25 fareboxes!
Surface Transit had identical buses numbered 3020-3059 of 1959. As well as ten Mack model C-49DT numbers 3000-3009 of 1958 in the same color scheme, fluorescent lighting and same rear seat and driver partition. Will post photos of the Macks later.
These TDH-5106s were among the last built before the assembly line at Pontiac was changed over to New Looks.

What a travesty not ONE of these beautiful buses was saved for preservation.
Eons ago, s a youngster, when in the city, I referred to these buses as "the buses with the sign that sticks out in front"!
We had NOTHING like these in "Joisey"!
THANK YOU for sharing thee pics of REAL buses!!!!!!

From what I read on the OMOT (Ohio Museum of Transportation) website, FACL #2694 was literally the very last-ever TDH-5106 ever built in the U.S. That 2645-2694 order, in sequence, was directly preceded by ST's 3020-3059.
Interesting that FACL and ST stuck with cushioned seating whilst the 'Tee-Yay', with their 9000 series of buses (none of which, I seem to recall, ever saw service in Manhattan during their active life), had moved on to hard fiberglass seats. (This would also hold with all aforementioned entities' first Fishbowls, though in FACL's and ST's case they'd be the only Fishbowls they'd order.)

That ST and FACL shared the same paint design scheme was indicative of FACL's ownership of ST since Dec. 17, 1956. It should be noted that the same Venus Bold Extended type on that 3043 would be used on the last 50 FACL Old Looks (2645-2694), which font was different from that on 2619 which had been shown at the start of this thread. But as I said, the ST order was the penultimate set of TDH-5106's built by GM; FACL's 2645-2694 were the absolute last.

As mentioned in my earlier post of the Fifth Avenue Coach TDH-5106 with the protruding destination sign box here is the Surface Transit Mack C-49 version.
Surface Transit only had ten Macks like this numbered 3000-3009
The same color scheme was applied matching the Fifth Avenue Coach buses.
These buses lacked the protruding destination sign box, but the interiors had the same seating color scheme and arrangement. Likewise, the driver’s partition was also included.
Unfortunately, when these 10 buses were taken over by MaBSTOA they didn’t look as sharp in the two-tone green color scheme.

BUSES!!!!!!!!!!!!
REAL BUSES!!!!!
These nostalgic photos evoke happy recollection of the past, when a bus LOOKED like a BUS and SOUNDED like a BUS!!!!
Also, they recall a long-lost era when not only there still so such diversity and variety within our bus hobby, but, also, when one did not feel threatened by unstable, unsavory characters who could possibly be quite dangerous.
One cannot help but wonder how such solidly-built, brutish "tanks" as the Old Looks and "Bulldogs" would fare under today's often "off the chart" conditions.....
