(see earlier posts)------------Another interesting bit to consider--------wondering of non-Dallas area folks who journeyed to the city to see JFK (11/63) who used intercity coaches for their trips------------"NYO"

Back in the day------------GREYHOUND's Dallas station was indeed nothing spectacular-nor sleek and stylish-but it WAS at least functional (40-odd hours was usually required for a GREYHOUND run between Dallas and New York-recall also that TRAILWAYS once had an large yard and repair facility in Dallas; not at all surprising-CONTINENTAL's headquarters was also located there--------"NYO"

Another TRAILWAYS tt which dated to 1963 featured (inside) a picture of a 4106 directly beneath a schedule for "5 STAR"("ROYAL LOUNGE") buses; the PABT ticket office phone # was "Wisconsin 7-5305; another detailed schedule (1963) touts the "GOLDEN NUGGET ROUTE"-----------------------------"NYO"

The "Golden Nugget Route", was one of many that both Greyhound and Trailways gave descriptive colorful names to, in their Russels's Official Bus Guide entrys. That particular one, was Trailways transcontinental route from New York to San Francisco via Pittsburgh, Chicago, Omaha, Cheyenne (or Denver), Salt Lake City, Reno, and Sacramento. In 1963 held down by Silver and Golden Eagle's.

IIRC, the "Royal Lounge" was Adirondack Trailways' name for their 4106's in Five Star Luxury Service on their New York-Albany-'Schenectady route. Adirondack did not acquire Eagle's for another few years.

THANK YOU for this info; NEWS to Your's Truly that 4106s were once used in their "5 STAR" operations-----QUITE interesting!; Regarding the 4106: (I know how you feel about these classic coaches!) what would be the longest "through" runs they operated on (GREYHOUND/TRAILWAYS)?---------the longer such runs I always associate with either the SCENICRUISER or the EAGLE; again like the now-iconic 4104 the 4106 was indeed a quite "jack of all trades" coach-being used in both long-haul and suburban operations---------"NYO"

Five Star Luxury Service used PD-4104's and 4106's in the Eastern US in the '50's and '60's. Mostly by independent Trailways carrier's, such as Trailways of New England, Safeway Trails, Virginia, Carolina, and Adirondack Trailways. They switched to Golden Eagles, around 1963. The GM's ran from New York City to Boston, Portland, Washington, Norfolk, and Schenectady mainly...
There might have been other's in that era.

Thank you again for your input; always appreciated! Wink Speaking of TRAILWAYS 4106s they were certainly quite popular with the TRAILWAYS affiliates-PACIFIC TRAILWAYS being only one of these-I know that 4106's also held down quite a few runs to Florida beginning in 1962 (quite a few tin toys replicated these classic buses back in the day!)------"NYO"

Interesting: According to "GREYHOUND BUSES: 1914-2000" GREYHOUND purchased nearly one thousand 4106s through 1964; interestingly-unlike earlier buses-the 4106 had a separate gasoline engine for the a/c---------"NYO"

Beginning in 1967 (after the CNJ abandoned its Jersey City operations) the folks and I began taking PS out of JSQ to Asbury Park to spend a week with an uncle and cousins (the folks were-not surprisingly- leery about going into to Newark to catch the CNJ after the 1967 riots); I so well recall riding both 4104s and 4106s down to Asbury Park-where we'd be picked up (I also recall riding a suburban Fishbowl on a few occasions!) Very Happy The last 4104/4106 I rode was in the early NJT era; I recall a 4104 that was ex-ORANGE & BLACK-and an INTER-CITY 4106 (NJT was QUITE interesting then-in the "rainbow" era-before the days of lookalike boxes on wheels)! Razz "NYO"

Further: When one looks at a 4106 you can see that basically the design was really just an update of the 4104; the angular body lines were indeed "in sync" with buses of the 60's-when the "angular" look was in-and the older "rounded" look was out; too-the original "EAGLES" were the first-and only-EAGLES that featured rounded body contours--------------"NYO"

Not at all surprisingly GREYHOUND and TRAILWAYS were the largest operators of the 4106; these buses could be found just about anywhere back in the day workhorses that they were-the SANTA FE once used 4106s as train connection buses between Los Angeles and Bakersfield-between 1961 and 1965 at least thirty-two hundred 4106s were built----------"NYO"

Actually, it was the 4106's new Detroit Diesel 8v-71's greater power that allowed it to eliminate the four cylinder "pony" gasoline engine that previous GM Coaches needed to power the air conditioner compressor, since the 6-71 was not strong enough.

Are you sure they had 4106's? I saw the railroad's PD-4104 train connection buses in 1968 used to connect their San Francisco Chief at Richmond, CA to Santa Fe's San Francisco terminal at 44 Fourth Street. Santa Fe buses also connected the Western Pacific California Zephyr, at the Middle Harbor Road terminus in Oakland to that San Francisco terminal. Continental Trailways buses also used that terminal. WP, ATSF, and CTS each had their own ticket offices within. Later, CTS moved to the street level of the Transbay Terminal.

The 4104's were painted red and white, with the words: Train-Bus on their side, along with the Santa Fe logo. The small letters on the baggage doors read: Santa Fe Trail Transportation Company...Santa Fe's highway subsidiary that at one time ran Santa Fe Trailways, until it was sold to Continental. Mostly it continued as a motor freight truck line.

Further on 4106s being operated by "SANTA FE TRANSPORTATION CO": long ago-there was also another photo of one in "BUS WORLD"-------- (BTW: See responses/info I posted in rapid transit topic on just why the postwar CTA El cars had a a strong PCC appearance)------------- Wink "NYO"

Interesting...I didn't see the buses used by the Santa Fe on the Los Angeles-Bakersfield train connection until after Amtrak took over that service. They contracted with various local companies since then, and still do to this day.
It makes sense that they would use their newer buses on the longer run, than the Bay Area train connections. Wish I could see those photo's...

BTW, the SP contracted with Western Greyhound Lines for their train connection buses, especially after discontinuing their ferries.

The UP ran their own buses between East Los Angeles, and various LA area cities. [/i]
