A point worth pondering:

I wonder why the White House was using CONTINENTAL TRAILWAYS instead of GREYHOUND?

I can’t say for certain, but the fact that Continental had its headquarters right there in Dallas, had a larger route network in Texas, and a larger fleet in the area, as well as probably very well connected with Texas politicians, all may have had some bearing…

I had forgotten that TRAILWAYS had their HQ in Dallas; that, indeed, could have very well been one of the deciding figures here, that, and, as you said, the company night have had strong ties with Texas politicians..............

Regarding Dallas and SGL:

".....effective January 1, 1932, SOUTHWESTERN abandoned it service west of Dallas, turning passenger over to SOUTHLAND instead, and listed the Missouri Pacific's exiting Memphis-Brinkley run in its timetable as connections instead of stating through trips at Memphis. Through St. Louis-Memphis-Dallas service was still operated......."

"........according to a January, 1939, SWG system timetable showed both SWG and LEE WAY running over the Amarillo-Raton route (SWG had purchased this route from LEE WAY in May, 1940) TRAILWAYS timetables also showed LEE WAY's Amarillo-Albuquerque trips at that time, linking BOWEN MOTOR COACHES (Dallas-Wichita-Amarillo) with SANTA FE TRAIL TRANSPORTATION CO........"

(info from an old issue of MOTOR COACH AGE, dealing with the history of SGL)

Recall, also, that, by the early 1970's, EAGLE production had moved to Brownsville, Texas, where CONTINENTAL TRAILWAYS had opened its new bus building factory.

In the late 1950's, a new TRAILWAYS terminal opened in Houston, covering a half-block........

Quick inquiry:

In November, 1963, did GREYHOUND and/or TRAILWAYS offer direct through service between Dallas and Washington DC, or was a change of buses required at some point, en route?

Further on GREYHOUND (to Dallas)......

From my archives, I was just consulting a January, 1957 "EASTERN GREYHOUND (Transcontinental TT) and also came across a page (with route diagram) for "THE OLD HICKORY ROUTE" (East Coast-Memphis-Los Angeles)

Cities served:

NEW YORK

WASHINGTON

RICHMOND

NORFOLK

ROANOKE

KNOXVILLE

BIRMINGHAM

ATLANTA

NASHVILLE

MEMPHIS

DALLAS

EL PASO

LO ANGELES

SAN DIEGO

The way the line map is shown, there was a "loop", if you will, branching off the "main line", serving Richmond and Norfolk.

Between Knoxville and Memphis, there was a "cut off" which served Nashville.

At El Paso, one line went to Los Angeles, while the other continued on to San Diego.

The cover of this 1957 TT shows a SCENICRUISER; the cover also informs us that the buses ran via:

NEW JERSEY TURNPIKE

PENNSYLVANIA TURNPIKE

OHIO TURNPIKE

INDIANA TURNPIKE

NEW YORK STATE THRUWAY

OKLAHOMA'S TURNER TURNPIKE

.....in a 1952 "TECHE GREYHOUND" tt, one "line map" for "THE MISSION TRAIL ROUTE" (Miami-Los Angeles/San Diego) lists the following cities:

MIAMI

JACKSONVILLE

LAKE CITY

TALLAHASSEE

MARIANNA

PENSACOLA

MOBILE

NEW ORLEANS

LAKE CHARLES

HOUSTON

SAN ANTONIO

DALLAS

FORT WORTH

EL PASO

PHOENIX

SAN DIEGO

LOS ANGELES

On the "line map", there is a "split" between Houston and El Paso; one line serves Dallas and Fort Worth, while the other line serves San Antonio......

......the following is from a SOUTHERN KANSAS GREYHOUND LINES tt (1950); an ACF-BRILL IC-41 on the cover......

"MINNEAPOLIS-KANSAS CITY-LAWRENCE-INDEPENDENCE-TULSA-DALLAS-MEXICO CITY"

(SWG and DMC [CONTINENTAL DIXIE LINES] connections at Dallas)

I don't have easy access to my "archives", to see exactly what services were offered at that time, but both companies had thru services at some times...

Trailways had several routes...American Buslines operated via Pittsburgh, Columbus, Indianapolis, St. Louis, and Oklahoma City, although by 1963 you would have to make one or two changes enroute between Washington and Dallas. Trailways carrier's did pool together to offer thru service between the two via Roanoke, Bristol, Knoxville, Nashville, Memphis, Little Rock, and Texarkana. Another thru route was via Richmond, Raleigh, Columbia, Augusta, Macon, Montgomery, Jackson, and Shreveport. Trailways also had some variations on the two southern routes, as this was the heart of the National Trailways network.
Greyhound also had a choice of northern and southern routes, which were a little different along the way from the Trailways routes.

60 years ago today: President Kennedy was gunned down in Dallas-on that dark tragic day our country was plunged into darkness and also lost its innocence (as well as a great President); on a lighter note think of GREYHOUND's fleet of SCENICRUISERS and 4104's and TRAILWAY's glorious EAGLES then ruling the highways---------as well as the other classic coaches then in operation------ironically CONTINENTAL TRAILWAYS had just issued a new tt on 11/23/63-one day after JFK's assassination--------the tt front depicted well-dressed passengers (as well as a hostess) on the red carpet boarding an older "EAGLE"------- tt was for "5 STAR" runs between New York and San Francisco--------indeed lost elegance as well as lost innocence----------

Followup------Your's Truly's older brother and his new wife were just back as newlyweds (courtesy of SEABOARD!) the night after JFK's assassination-one of the gifts they brought back was a tin friction CONTINENTAL TRAILWAYS Eagle (one of the original Kassbohrer coaches)-12" in length-it is proudly displayed today-with its original box!)------ironic too when you recall that there were a few EAGLES (press buses) when JFK was in Dallas on that fateful day; in fact-yesterday on 1010 WINS News Radio-an elderly retired newscaster was on briefly ; he had been on one of the press buses when the President was slain (part of his original broadcast was aired)-------ironic too that regular workaday buses were indeed part of United States' history on that bright sunny Dallas day that suddenly was plunged into darkness--------"NYO"

Another TRAILWAYS tt which dated to 1963 featured (inside) a picture of a 4106 directly beneath a schedule for "5 STAR"("ROYAL LOUNGE") buses; the PABT ticket office phone # was "Wisconsin 7-5305; another detailed schedule (1963) touts the "GOLDEN NUGGET ROUTE"-----------------------------"NYO"
