Truly a, sad, undignified ending for these once-proud MaBSTOA buses now at the proverbial "end of the line" (1970)

#2648, in particular, looks like it's seen some rough days..... Sad

In this 1970 scene, MaBSTOA Old Look #2690 seems to have recieved not much in the way of "respect", unlike "Dangerfield" #4627, which seems to be in decent-enough shape (then again, the "Dangerfields" were then still pretty much "the new kids on the block", compared to the remaining Old Looks)........

That'd be #2648, but . . . yeah. I read a book on NYC buses and they noted that, as of 1972, even the oldest 'Tee-Yay' buses (all Fishbowls from the first generation) running on Manhattan's rough-and-tumble streets seemed to get better TLC than the Fishbowls that MaBSTOA were running at the time. It was as if, once those venerable Old Looks with the protruding boxes for the front roll signs were sent to 'da Bronx', the attitude was they'd get the same treatment that was more typical for what Surface had done in the years before FACL swallowed them up. Contrast these with the few of those last Old Looks in their last months on Fifth Avenue in 1970, before several of those were scattered amongst the outer boroughs for TA service.

As they days dwindle down to a precious few......

Here's MaBSTOA #2654 (one of "the buses with the sign that sticks out in the front") on duty on 5th Avenue (at 8th St.)......

Here's #2666 at Broadway & Park Place, in 1971.

Note that the sign box is empty, and no ad cards are being carried.

The end, sadly, was nigh...... Crying or Very sad

"TWILIGHT TIME"(1970)

Here we see two scruffy-looking 7000's (1957 TDH-5106) awaiting their respective departure times from the Queens Village station.....

They may've been beaten up 'round the bottom front, but . . . they still seemed to look in better shape than the ex-FACL/ST Old Looks by the time their numbers were up.

W.B.:

I'll agree with you, there.....in their last years of service (based on the many photos I have seen), most of the ex-ST and FACL Old Looks really were sahowing the years of toil on the streets of "Noo Yawk" (ditto the old ST MACKS)

IMHO, when the very last FACL buses (Old Looks and Fishbowls) were retired, it also marked the era of a long and colorful era in the City's bus operations.

Speaking of "long-in-the-tooth" buses, I am still amazed that AVENUE B. was still operating MACKS (contemporaries of those rostered by SURFACE) as late into the 1970's as they did.

In fact, these "tanks" outlasted those last operated by the "Tee-Yay" by a number of years....

When these photos of "AVENUE B" MACKS were snapped in 1976, it was already close to a decade that the last MACKS operated by the Hudson County "indy" companies I grew up with had disappeared.

Parts for these old relics had to be increasingly difficult to obtain; "BLUE & WHITE" (NJ), still operating several ex-"YONKERS TRANSIT" New Look MACKS in the mid-70's, surely had this same issue also......

Here's a latter-day photo (1972) of veteran Old Look #7014, running in Brooklyn.

Though still in pretty decent shape, note that the sign box is empty (a sight obviously common during the final years of Old Look operation), and a cardboard sign is being displayed in the windshield.....

Date this classic "comparison"* photo to 1972.....

This nostalgic old photo shows us the sharp contrasts in bus designs, between the late 1940's/early 1950's and the advent of the first Fishbowls in 1959.......

As I said . . . even with 'Tee-Yay' Fishbowls there seemed more 'TLC' than with MaBSTOA's newer rolling stock . . . for comparison . . .

['4 TO 135 ST-BWAY']

But also . . . notice, on that 'Tee-Yay' Fishbowl pic, the same numbering for that bus as on Old Look stock. Once the Old Looks disappeared, so did those types of numeral characters, and they were left with the same type of numerals which dated to 'Peter Witt' streetcar days.
