Tremont & Boston Rd, 1971.

Here, The (MaBSTOA) Flex is equipped with the radio "bubble" on the roof, while the Fishbowl is lacking.....

I noticed that the first pic (#155622) had their bus with a different type radio thing on the top front.

W.B.:

I noticed that myself, but was not too sure that my hunch was correct.

Interesting, also, when one recalls that the radio antennas which were used on the older subway cars were obviously much smaller than those used on the buses; they were also unprotected from the elements, simply mounted on the cab end......

In these vintage photos, note how the radio antennas used on subway equipment were not protected from the elements, as they were on the buses.......

From "UNDER THE SIDEWALKS OF NEW YORK" (Cudahy):

".......the channel arrangement of the radio system is that all trains in a given sector hear all the dispatcher's messages, but only the dispatcher can hear the motormen......" (I'm wondering if this was similar to the operation of bus radios)

Also: ".....some of the old-time motormen have had difficulty adjusting to the very idea of two-way communications....."

"COMPARISON" [Broadway & 231st St., 1981]

(It would seem to me that, by this late date, all of the MTA buses would have been equipped with radios; note that #6611, unlike #8396 alongside, is not equipped with a radio "bubble").......

Here's a rare (and interesting!) "topside" view of MaBSTOA Fishbowl #6862 from 1981; note the large patch on the roof, where the radio "bubble" would have been........

Regarding the photo of #6862, seen in the previous post:

Am wondering why the radio "bubble" was removed from the roof; was this bus soon to be retired?

Was new communications equipment about to be installed, hence the bare spot of the roof? (what was the driver using in the meantime?)

This is the first time I've seen a photo such as this.....

3rd Avenue & 34th St., 1982.

None of these buses seen here have communications "humps".......

Allan & Division, 1981 (note empty sign box and cardboard sign in the windshield; #8194 is equipped with roof "bubble")......

167th St & Bryant, 1972

Note, also, that this bedraggled, weary-looking, first-generation workhorse, Fishbowl #3172, has sadly been tagged; no advertising adorns its battle-scarred flanks, and, also, the right-hand portion of the sign box is blank (#35 CROSSSTOWN displayed on the left)......
