Bus radios......

In "RAPID TRANSIT SERIES BUSES" (McCausland), the following....

".......the RTS placed emphasis on passenger comfort; why not entertain them too? GM offered a host of radios as optional equipment. Few were equipped with such a system......"

(the following excerpt accompanies a photo):

".......few buses were equipped with such a system; fewer yet with the deluxe AM-FM Stereo unit shown here......."

Given "Noo Yawk's" diverse taste in music, I certainly cannot see this even being experimented with on MTA buses!

Interestingly, in 1948, CAPITAL TRANSIT (DC), looking for an additional source of revenue, allowed radio station WWDC-FM to install and operate radios in their streetcars any buses. Installation and maintenance was at WWDC's expense.

As you might expect, this experiment was FAR removed from any sort of success; as evidenced by the numerous political cartoons that appeared in the local papers, the riding public was NOT enamored with radios on public transport!

One such cartoon showed a streetcar loaded with harried passengers clearly NOT enamored with the radio broadcasts; the dash sign of the car reads:

"A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE-FOR ADDED PROFITS"

The roller curtain reads: "49 & NAUSEA"....... Rolling Eyes

On a somewhat related note.....

About 1962, GREYHOUND decided to enhance East Coast service to Florida by installing an individually-controlled AM radio set at each passenger seat aboard a limited number of SCENICRUISERS.

About 50 buses were adapted for the new radios.

Chrome consoles (MOTOROLA), one for each seat, were installed along the underside of the overhead luggage racks.

Earphones were connected by a cord that plugged into the console with a jack; above each console, bolted to the floor of the luggage rack, was a chromed tuning module.

The master radio receiver was located in a compartment just behind the left front wheel.

A whip-type antenna, about 8 feet long, was mounted in the center of the lower deck roof.

At first, the radio service was free, but, later, GREYHOUND introduced a $1 fee for headphone rental.

Eventually, this novel service was dropped; the consoles were continually getting whacked by luggage getting shoved onto the luggage racks, the wiring was subject to breakage, and the roof antenna was subject to damage when the buses were washed.

Oh, well, it WAS a good idea, at least at the onset.......
