On a related note (transit vandalism):

By the late 1960's/early 1970's, the rattan and plastic/leather seat cushions that were then being used in the older subway cars were removed and replaced with solid fiberglass seating.

According to the book, "NEW YORK CITY TRANSIT SYSTEM BUS & TROLLEY COACH FLEET" (James Greller), the last Old Looks to be delivered with cushioned seats were the TDH-5101's and the Last MACKS with cushioned seats were the C-49's.

When the MACKS had their seat cushions replaced by hard plastic, those buses running in Brooklyn received green seats, while those in Staten Island were furnished with pink plastic seating......

While the last Manhattan and Bronx buses with cushioned seatings were the FACL and ST Fishbowls of 1960. Apparently their attitude about seating, to the end, differed from what was adopted by then by the 'Tee-Yay'.

W.B.:

Here in "Joisey", it seemed as though cushioned seats lasted right up until many of the older bues were retired.

I remember the ex-PSNJ/TNJ Fishbowl transits retaining upholstered seating until they were retired in the laate 1980's/very early 1990'ss; I can remember both cushioned and hard plastic seating on NHBL's Fishbowls, but their Old Looks retained the upholstered seating until they were retired (the last vanished in 1986)

I've also mentioned the ex-WAMATA Flex New Look that was being used on the old NHBL #1, back around 1995/1996; remarkably, this bus still had the original bucket seating, and very little damage, remarkably, was present.....

I found it very coincidental that we have three photos of the same bus with three different color schemes, two different numbers, and two different owners.

First, we have Surface Transit #6, an air conditioned GM TDH-5301 on route 2. The roof-line "Go the Motor Coach Way" slogan was replaced with "Air Conditioned".

Secondly, we have the same bus but this time as MaBSTOA 3216 on route 17. Notice the slight paint modification above the first window where the green paint was altered in order to fit the entire Manhattan and Bronx Surface... script.

By the way, the old look in front is an ex-FACCo GM TDH-5104 with the wide rear doors in the 2500 series.

Thirdly we have the same bus, 3216 this time on route 5, in the all green MaBSTOA color scheme. The roof-line script color changed from the previous green to aqua. This color scheme makes the bus look much better.

.....as usual, OUTSTANDING pictures of a bygone era in "Noo Yawk" buses! Very Happy

Today's insipid, oversized milk cartons and creeping, crawling, people-eating caterpillars cannot even begin to compare to the classics of yesterday, the buses we knew, loved, and, sadly, took for granted. Sad

THANK YOU for sharing these nostalgic and wonderful old photos of REAL buses!!! Very Happy

Interesting thought, regarding Fishbowl production.....

The last in the US were built in 1977; Canadian production lasted for a few more years.

It would have been interesting, had Fishbowl production had continued through the 1980's, how much more the basic design might have been further adapted/updated (like the EAGLE coaches); look at how long the famed VW "Beetle" remained in production, with virtually no external changes over the years......

Hard to believe this nostalgic (and wintry!) scene dates to over a half-century ago.......

The corner WOOLWORTH's and the ancient, once-commonplace cast iron fire alarm box date this 1969 photo as much as the MaBSTOA Fishbowl......

Fellows:

I just received, earlier today, a number of back-issue NYC Subway calendars (Newkirk Images); sadly, as you probably already know, Bill can no longer put out these magnificent calendars, due to a number of reasons (COVID and rising costs both major contributing factors)

Bus-wise, there are several nostalgic photos showing "Noo Yawk" buses under El tracks, and on the streets:

2012:

The rear cover features a number of small photos showing subway station entrances, as they appeared decades ago.

One photo (from 1964) shows a Fishbowl (w/three piece rear window) at 149th & 3rd Avenue, with an IRT kiosk on the left, and the El up above.

Another photo (1972) shows a "Tee-Yay" green Fishbowl (nearside away from the curb) showing the BMT station entrance at 23rd & Broadway.

2014 (July):

A pristine (!!) ST MACK was caught on camera under the 3rd Avenue El at 100th St., back in 1953.

2017 (March):

This nostalgic photo from 1964 shows a head-on view of an IRT Kiosk in Harlem (145th St.)

On the opposite side of the street, we see a Fishbowl trailed by three Old Looks.

2019 (April):

Near the 125th St. elevated IRT station (1963) we here see a FACL Old Look (square windows) and a Fishbowl, heading in opposite directions.

Man, talk about a changed city, and a changed world.

These "Newkirk" calendars were mini-masterpieces, each and every one; they will be greatly missed, indeed.......thanks, Bill, for the wonderful memories......

2018 calendar (April):

Wiiliamsburg Bridge Plaza, 1972.

Under the BMT el, pair of two-tone blue Fishbowls are seen front and center; at far right, the rear section of a "Tee-Yay" green Dangerfield can just be glimpsed.

2019 calendar (March):

Fordham Rd (3rd Avenue El,1956):

A SURFACE Old Look is seen heading away from the camera, under the el (another ST bus can just be glimpsed in the shadows beneath the elevated structure).......

One of my bus faves is May 1998 in which a former FACL new-look can be seen in its green and cream livery on the 104 on Broadway south of 125 Street. The tail of a green and cream Mack heading north is also visible.

I have to try to get a copy of that calendar; I'd love to see that picture! Wink

Unless the monthly photo was of a street entrance (or depicting elevated lines) buses, as a general rule, were not to be seen.

To this day, I wish that at least one FACL and one ST Fishbowl had survived, and had been preserved.

I guess it would still be easy enough to restore two Fishbowls in those liveries; we took far too much for granted, when such classic buses were still commonplace.......
