Seems upper Manhattan where that bus was headed wasn't that much better overall . . . north of 96th Street, apart from possibly the area around Columbia University, is of a way different world from south of 96th Street.
Wasn't it around this time that, on Bruckner Boulevard (actual building address: 20 Bruckner Boulevard) atop a building visible to those passing through the Willis Avenue Bridge, Golden Lights was advertising there? |

Also Manhattan, nearer to (and across the street from) the Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center complex. The black print on yellow background on the street signs should have been the tipoff ('da Bronx' street signs were white lettering, blue background back then). The (M)5 and (M)4 buses are another tipoff. The sign for the 5 would have dated to early 1971, when it was extended to the George Washington Bridge Bus Station; that same type was also on same vintage signs during changes to key Bx## bus routes that same year. |

W.B.:
Back in the SURFACE/MaBSTOA/early MTA-eras, how many (about) off-street bus terminals were in use, if any, in da Bronx?
What about the present?
Thanks in advance for any input....

St. Nicholas & Amsterdam, 1983.
It would seem that grungy, work-worn #8495 seems a bit "incomplete", to say the least.....
No ads of any sort are being displayed.......

Looking almost as spiffy and shiny as a vintage tin litho toy bus, we see #8693 at Fort Washington & 176th St., back in 1983; note dash brackets for missing ad card panel......

It's a bright, sunny (but slushy!) day here at Amsterdam Avenue & 161st St., winter, 1983.......

W.B.:
Just curious......
Was economics (maintenance, etc.) at least partially the reason why batwings were eventually discontinued?
The "Em-Tee-Yay" was always looking to "trim costs", and not always in a manner conducive to the riding public....

May've had something to do with it. Didn't Transign by that point discontinue manufacture of those 'batwings', thus replacement parts for those that came off were difficult if not impossible to come by? |
