Seeing the last picture, I thought that font was used for the exteriors of Comprehensive and East Side Omnibus rolling stock, up to the point where the Board of Transportation took over their routes in September of '48 (today, Sept. 24, is the 73rd anniversary of them taking over Routes M-1 Madison-Chambers, M-3 49th-50th Street, M-7 65th Street, M-11 York Avenue, M-13 First Avenue and M-15 Second Avenue).

Have you found any photos of the Comprehensive buses on the 65th-66th Street route? Mom brought me and my sister on one such eastbound across the park in the days when they had nickel turnstiles and kids our age paid no fare. She enjoyed showing us off to the obstetrician. My sister's birth was a difficult one at St. Ann's Hospital on East 69th Street, and she reached 83 yesterday!

Go to page 11 on the NY Bus Board, and you will find the thread on "COMPREHENSIVE", that I started some years back; there are also photos there, which one of the other fellows had posted)

Some years back, I had a friend who lived in Paterson, NJ (1940's/1950's); when going out to Coney Island, his family would take an ERIE train to Jersey City, and then the ferry over to Chambers St.

There, they'd board a COMPREHENSIVE bus and ride to the BMT station (they'd board the train at Chambers) and then travel out to Coney Island.

He also remembered seeing B&QT trolleys from the train while riding on elevated trackage.

I had never heard of COMPREHENSIVE until this fellow brought it up, in a conversation.....

No . . . that was part of the 62-bus order (7300-7361) that all went to the Hudson depot at Pier 57 where not only the M16, but also M11, M12, M13, M14, M21 and M26 (ex M15) were based at that point. I think it was in that time period that they began phasing out the first of the built-for-MaBSTOA Fishbowls (3301-3555). That Hudson got all 62 buses for OA contrasted heavily with Flx's 'Tee-Yay' buses of same vintage (7000-7204) where the first few went to 'MAN' depot across from the Bruckner Boulevard sign in 'da Bronx', and the rest were scattered amongst the other TA depots in the other boroughs.

No, those that not only replaced the remainder of the 3rd Avenue El, but also the last of the 1960 FACL/ST Fishbowls, were the last 60 Fishbowls (T6H-5309A 4860-4919) that were ever built for MaBSTOA that made their first appearance in the summer of '73. (The last TA Fishbowls were earlier in the year - T6H-5309A 6200-6349 and T6H-5310A 6901-6956.)

Have you ever heard any accounts of "Tee-Yay"/MaBSTOA drivers (and/or mechanics) that preferred GM's over Flexies (or the other way around?)

As mere "sideline enthusiasts", we cannot personally comment on which manufacturer was better (unless, of course, we were drivers, back in the day!) Wink

IMHO, I found both GM's and Flexies to be good, reliable, solid buses, and, I'm sure many would also concur.

Of course, there ARE always exceptions.....

I think we can objectively judge the GM's and Flxies' performance on the basis of how many years they plied 'Noo Yawk' streets and carried passengers to and from their varied destinations, and the extent to which each reached 'iconic' status. Not just the 'Tee-Yay's' or MaBSTOA's, but also other operators of old like Avenue B & East Broadway, Triboro Coach, Queens Transit, Steinway Transit, Green Bus Lines et al. (And in the Fishbowl era, the tail end of the run of Fifth Avenue Coach Lines and Surface Transit.)

As for Grumman's . . . er, clunkers, they got into that position after having taken over Flxible.

Like the venerable Old Looks before them, the Fishbowls, indeed (IMHO) were truly "America's Buses"; they were virtually everywhere, and could slug it out through all but the mightiest blizzards....they were TANKS!!!!!!!! Very Happy

The Flexies, too, over the years, I found to be great buses; I always liked them.

Strange, when I saw the first "Em-Tee-Yay" GRUMMANS in New York, and, later, in New Jersey, I thought that hey had a "Euro" look to them (at least, I thought so!) Wink

Both the GRUMMANS (and Flex Metros) I got to like over the years; ditto, of course, the now-iconic RTS.

About 15 or so years ago, NJT replaced the workhorse METRO with NABI's; though the GRUMMAN/METRO buse were boxy, they DID have an appeal that you grow to like.

The current NABI's (sporting NJT's bare-bones "paint"), have all the appeal of a huge white shoebox on wheels.....does not do a thing for me. Sad

Today, I MAY be gray, but, at least, I can remember REAL American buses!!!! (and great MUSIC) Very Happy
