Yep . . . she sure stood in the way of 'MADISON' all right . . . must've been when they had that grey paint scheme as the result of wartime restrictions.

W.B.:

In that same book, the picture on the frontspiece shows snarled traffic during a a typical Manhattan rush hour; in the photo, I counted at least ten buses (mostly SURFACE) in a two-block stretch, as well as at least 20 taxis (mostly "SKY VIEW" cabs)

A few really nostalgic "Port Of Authority" pictures, including one showing an ACF-BRILL C-44 heading to Paterson, and a MACK suburban of ORANGE & BLACK, heading for Cliffside Park and Fort Lee (my godmother commuted on these buses for years) are also here.

One picture shows a carfloat carrying new IRT R-12's, with a DL&W steam tug in charge!

R-11's are also seen (one shot has the conductor between the cars, "slapping the caps") as well as crowded interior of an R-10, and a train of MUDC cars on the 3rd Avenue El.

Oddly, in the one chapter, the only non-"Noo Yawk" photo shows a CTA Brill trolleybus!

Two INTER-CITY White 798's are also seen leaving the Lincoln Tunnel on the NJ side, back when the third tube was still under construction.

The Staten Island Ferry is also featured, showing the "MISS NEW YORK" (with the "ELLIS ISLAND" ferry in the background,) as well as the original Whitehall Street terminal.

Again, this is an excellent book more than worthy of shelf space in any NY-area transit enthusiast's library.......Very Happy

Funny.......

Though the old buses were knew were built like tanks, they were retired light-years before most of the subway cars that dated from the same era as the buses did.

Example:

The last of the IND R-10's ("Thunderbirds") were retired in 1989; these cars dated to 1948/1949.

Now, in 1989, how many 4510's were still in MTA service??

Here in "Joisey", the very last NHBL Old Looks (the few that remained) departed in 1986; at least 30 or more years old.

I've also heard (many times) that the hulking monsters known as BMT "D" types were retired in 1965, even though they still had some years left, and were giving good service, because the "Tee-Yay" wanted to purge all "non-standard" equipment from the roster (ditto the 1936 BMT "Multis", retired even earlier, in 1961.

The very last of the prewar IND cars, the last of which were built in 1940 (R-9), were in service until 1977......

Broadway & 182nd St., 1971.

So much here dates this nostalgic view, not in the least first-generation Fishbowl #3194 (still in "Tee-Yay" green); the dapper driver of #3194, the big "Dee-Troit" gas guzzlers, the classic CHOW MEIN restaurant (there seemed to be one on every block in "Noo Yawk", back in the day).......

A busy, bustling, bygone scene at Southern Boulevard & Westchester Avenue, 1972.

Fishbowl #6780 is holding down a "5A to PARKCHESTER" run......

Initially, of that 1965-66 batch, all non-batwings went to the Bronx while the batwings were exclusively in Manhattan; but as the years went on (i.e. as early as 1967-68 ), a few non-batwings were swapped to Manhattan in exchange for batwings like #6780 as here.

W.B.:

You've aroused my curiosity now.......

You stated that, initially, that the non-batwing buses of the 1965/1966 batch all went to "da Bronx", while the buses equipped with batwings all went to Manhattan.

Was this because the Manhattan routes were deemed more "prestigious" than those lines serving "da Bronx"?

"Batwings in da Bronx"......

This (undated) scene looks to be taken in the early 70's; note that Fishbowl #8372 is devoid of all ads (batwing and regular ad cards)

Bus is signed for "#2 to 231 ST-BWAY"........

It did seem indicative of the perception that, even then, "da Bronx" was on the skids; that became moot, however, and it seems the swap occurred, once the 1966-67 set, which was not only all batwing but all A/C, arrived. I noticed the first 75 or so of the 1966-67 A/C batwings (#8372 inclusive) were allotted to the Bronx while all the rest went to Manhattan.

W.B.:

Recall, too, that prewar* IRT cars (including the 1938 WF cars) were transferred to the Bronx 3rd Avenue el, instead of the newer postwar "SMEE" equipment, circa-1960.

And, when "modern" SMEE equipment came to the El in 1969, they were then the OLDEST IRT cars then in use (the R-12's); so, in this instance, once again, the oldest revenue equipment was being relegated to "Da Bronx"....

"NYO"

*Recall, also, that the very last IRT line in Manhattan to use Lo-V's was the Bowling Green-South Ferry shuttle (which closed in 1977); when these cars were retired in 1964, that were, likewise, replaced with the oldest SMEE equipment then operating on the IRT (R-12's)

That's actually upper Manhattan; I doubt there's an Amsterdam Avenue in "da Bronx," especially intersecting with 162nd Street.
