......just read that there is "talk" of either (again) running electric commuter trains on the long-dormant (since 1962) LIRR Rockaway Beach branch, or operate MTA subway trains along the line.

Nice ideas, either way, but, IF either scenario ever becomes reality, it will be long, long past our day......

On a sunny day 1956, we see a train of ancient, repainted LIRR MP-54's* (working a fantrip) at the Brooklyn Manor station**; note the train of new BMT R-16's passing over the LIRR tracks in the background......

*MP-54's always looked HAPPY! Wink

**The old station and wooden platforms reminds me of the SIRT of the 1960's! Very Happy

Though the LIRR's "pioneer" MU's, the MP-41's, had much in common with the early INTERBOROUGH subway equipment, the MP-54's were true suburban commuter cars, much larger than the older 41's.

The LIRR's MP-54's began operating out of the new Pennsylvania Station in 1910; eventually, the LIRR's MP-54 fleet would constitute the largest electric MU fleet in the nation.

Very few examples of thee once-commonplace electrics survive today.

Remember, even though the PRR was the LIRR's parent company, MP-54 operation began first on the LIRR; it would not be until 1915 that the first PRR MP-54's went into operation.

Earlier, I'd mentioned that there was a joint BRT/LIRR operation out of Chambers Street; it would have been quite interesting, to say the least, had this brief operation (which only ran seasonally until 1917) had lasted longer, and eventually became a full-time operation.

Remember, too, that, at one time, when the first M-1's were entering service, it was found that clearance issues kept them from serving the Atlantic Avenue terminal in Brooklyn; modifications had to be undertaken before the new M-1 MU's could operate into the facility.....

Interesting, also, is how the LIRR/MTA dropped the old "MP" designation for MU cars; from the original Mi1's through today's MU fleet, the "M" prefix, which started with the M=1's 50 years ago, is still in use today.

The modern 1960's MP-78's (also, recall the "ZIPS") did not last long as MU cars; they were converted to conventional coaches after not to many years as MU cars.

On the H&M/PATH, the 1958 "joint service" cars that were owned by the PRR were designated MP-52's, while those owned by H&M/PATH were designated Class "K" (these cars replaced the old "Red McAdoo" MP-38's.......

Interesting page (w.photos, etc) on classic LIRR rolling stock:

https://railroad.net/lirr-rolling-stock-t81589.html

Note that the MP-72's (with the exception of perhaps one car, that was equipped with a horn) had whistles, as did the "ZIP" cars.....

On September 23, 1978, the "TRAIN TO THE PLANE" debuted on MTA rails (in actuality, it was more "The Train To The Bus To The Plane".

I used to enjoy the TV commercial* and radio spots, way back in the day; I never had any reason to ride it, though (of course, today, many years later, I wish I had, just to say I did)

Here's a link to an interesting page on the old "JFK Express"......

*At the bottom of this page, there is a link to a Youtube video of one of the old "Train To The Plane" commercials....QUITE (1970's) nostalgic..... Wink

Here's an unusual and interesting overhead shot showing the B&QT Tillary loop; note all the cars are single-ended Peter Witts (6000 series)

Note the angle of the one car switching tracks; it almost looks like a derailment! Shocked

Two views of Peter Witts at the 9th Avenue depot; this car house, in fact, was not only the home of the B&QT PCC fleet, but was also the very last operating car house in Brooklyn.....
