Born in 1976, the Tram was only supposed to be "temporary" until the new subway station/link was built, allowing Roosevelt Island residents to commute directly via subway.
However, even when the new subway line opened, there was great opposition from the public, who wanted the Tram retained.
Today, the Tram is the only "commuter cable car" system in America; new gondolas have since replaced the originals from the 1970's (I've heard, awhile back, that these were supposed to be preserved)
The Tram, IMHO, is far too often overlooked by transit enthusiasts, and, for that reason, deserves to be recognized here.

Here's the history of the Tram; an excellent photo gallery is also included.
Interesting to note, too, that the Tram was the last "transit" operation in the City to use tokens, before Metrocards replaced them......

Here is an interesting view of the Tram, looking east from the Manhattan station; notice the heavy girderwork on the approach to bridge.
Until 1942, this structure carried trains of the 2nd Avenue Elevated, which saw its last trains in 1942......

This historical photo shows a 2nd Avenue El train (comprised of MUDC cars) crossing the Queensboro Bridge; as I had noted earlier here, this operation ended in 1942.......

In this long-ago view at Queensboro Plaza, beneath the complex ganglia of steelwork for the elevated subway lines, we see, not only a QB Ry streetcar, but, also, a FACCo. "Queen Mary" double-decker......
