Here we see veteran YELLOW #463 sporting its rebuilt Old Look-style front end, near the 3rd Avenue El......

And those buses handled crosstown routes of lesser areas, well into the point of the 1962 strike that kayoed Fifth Avenue Coach Lines. (I saw pics taken in 1959 or thereabouts that had these buses on the 14th Street line - and lettered 'FIFTH AVENUE COACH LINES INC.' Another I saw from 1960 of them on the 8th Street crosstown with FACL branding on the sides.)

W.B.:

As always, greatly appreciate your input and historical facts. Wink

I see, then, that my memory was correct; just as I was starting school (1962) I remember riding a Lo-V train downtown with Mom to 14th St (she wanted to shop at Kleins)

I remember we also walked around a bit, and I DO recall seeing a few of those rebuilt YELLOWS as we trekked about (we didn't have time to ride one, though) Sad

I know we later walked to the H&M (PATH) station at 14th and the took "the tubes" back to Journal Square (Jersey City)

Sure wish one of these unique buses, somehow, eventually made it into preservation......

Note Lo-V train on the lower level, obviously "museum" cars on a farewell fantrip (recall, the prewar IRT cars on the Bronx 3rd Avenue El were retired in 1969)

Also, note the blanked-off a/c unit on the two-tone blue Fishbowl down below......

Now there's incongruity for ya. A soon-to-be demolished el remnant with the then-new T6H-5309A put into service. (Only 20 were initially allotted to Manhattan, exclusively at the Hudson depot where they plied the M11, M16 and other routes assigned there for years.)

W.B.:

A good title for that nostalgic photo could be "The Old Order Changeth" Wink

The Bronx 3rd Avenue El also had the distinction (as you know) of being the last bastion of prewar IRT cars; somehow, in all our travels, Mom and I never rode that line (Mom well remembered the "Els" from her 1920's childhood; her family often took day excursions out to Coney Island via the BMT elevated lines that then radiated from Park Row; she clearly remembered the "convertible" cars on many of these outings)

I remember we discussed this awhile ago elsewhere, but I am curious as to have many MaBSTOA buses were used to replace the El, once service ended.

I know I've read that the area through which the El ran was already in decline, and became even more rundown after the El closed.

You have to wonder how many prefered the buses to the El trains, and vice-versa........

Note the new '55 FORD station wagon and '55 Chevy taxi; a SURFACE Old Look is seen in the foreground, with a MACK a little further ahead.

Another bus can just be glimpsed under the El structure; a few others can also be seen in the far distance, on the left.

Also, to further date this nostalgic photo, note the fabled AUTOMAT on the left.......

Looks like on the right, one of the '53 or '54 GM Old Looks purchased by Surface . . . I saw farther away a Mack . . .

W.B.:

Then that Old Look in the photo might have been a TDH-5104 or a TDH-5106; SURFACE purchased the 5104's (10 in all) in 1953.

The 30 5106's arrived in 1954.......

Here's another 1973 photo taken at the elevated IRT Gun Hill Road station; note the Fishbowl on the right, again with a blanked-off a/c unit.

The "Museum" IRT Lo-V train on the lower level of the IRT station, is, clearly, on a fantrip; the last prewar IRT cars on this line (and in the system) were retired in 1969.......

April, 1973, finds a four-car train of R-12's working the 3rd Avenue line, as seen from the upper level at Gun Hill Road.

Note the Fishbowl beneath the El, still sporting classic "Tee-Yay" green......

Check out the classic, pole-mounted 1960's "Tee-Yay" bus stop sign, adjacent to the IRT elevated Gun Hill Rd station in 1973, not long before 3rd Avenue El service ended (I'm VERY lucky indeed to have one of these relics in my collection today!) Very Happy

This one will really twang the chords of nostalgia; here, way back in 1962, we see the rear of a SURFACE Old Look*, with trains of prewar IRT cars occupying both levels of the Gun Hill Road station.....ahhhh, sweet nostalgia! Very Happy

*Note "Joe Cool", with a CIGARETTE in his mouth, sitting in the rear of the bus....NOT NICE, JOE(!!)

And the color-coded street signs which, in this case, date to c.1969-70.

Must've been one of the 4506's or 4507's that were junked once the first of the made-for-MaBSTOA Fishbowls first entered service in the Bronx (and a few in Manhattan) in the next year.

Again, I find it interesting that 1962 was a watershed year in many ways . . .
- The TWU strike against FACL and ST that led to the creation of MaBSTOA
- The Port Authority setting up PATH to take over the H&M lines (long before the initials H&M were associated with a clothing chain)
- The New York Mets playing their first games (I won't say how Wink )
- Joe Franklin beginning his long run on WOR-TV (Channel 9)

As for Klein's . . . there are two pictures I've seen (both from the 1960's) where their "zipper" was operational, but they weren't in full and not all that clear as to what 'zipper' fonts were traveling near the roof of the building on 14th Street; sadly, by the time photos were snapped in 1972 as first-gen MaBSTOA Fishbowls were passing on the 14th Street crosstown that "zipper" was apparently inoperative.

W.B.:

Agreed. 1962 was indeed a year with quite a bit happening (recall John Glenn orbiting the Earth aboard "Friendship 7"; there was a huge television screen put up at Grand Central, so the crowds could watch this historic space flight. Though Your's Truly was only just starting school, I remember the television coverage well, and still have tin litho "Friendship 7" space capsule Mom bought me, in honor of the occasion!) Wink

I remember, too, the PATH takeover of the H&M (locals continued to refer to PATH as "The Tubes"....I still do!) I also remember the old "HUDSON RAPID TUBES" sign over the entrance to the old Journal Square station. The ancient "Black" cars had roofs like those on the 1938 IRT World's Fair cars, but had vestibules like the "traditional" Lo-V's.

Getting back to "Noo Yawk", I often think of how, if things turned out differently, the (bus) transit scene in New York might have looked had FACCo not disappeared after the 1962 strike. (Imagine seeing RTS' emblazoned with the timeless, classic "GO THE MOTOR COACH WAY" slogan? Wink

Interesting too, that FACCo double-deckers carried no exterior ads; in London, from earliest days, the double-deckers were literally festooned with colorful ads; this prompts me to ask this question: when did exterior ads begin to be displayed on the exteriors of New York buses (I know that, by the 1960's, exterior ads were commonplace)

Of course exterior bus advertising would take a HUGE leap when the "Batwing" era began...... Very Happy
