.......the last TARS streetcars operated in the Bronx; these lines were replaced by SURFACE buses:

TARS ROUTE "B" to "Bx26" bus

TARS ROUTE "S" to "Bx31" bus

TARS ROUTE "T" to "Bx40" bus

TARS ROUTE: "V" to "Bx28" bus

However, in the northern areas, TARS streetcars continued to run until 1952, the very last vestiges of the once-complex TARS rail network.....

When this photo was snapped at Mount Vernon, circa-1951, the last vestiges of the once-vast TARS streetcar network were on the brink of extinction.....

.....just HAD to post this one! Wink

Here, TARS car #300 is operating on the route #5 line, with a classic GREYHOUND 743 YELLOW approaching from the right (note that the caption identifies the bus as a BRILL!) Shocked

Oy, Vey! Rolling Eyes

Note the rear of a postwar TWIN, just visible in the right background, in this circa-1950 scene......

Here, a "modern" TARS car, seen holding down a run on the "U" line; note SURFACE Old Look just behind the streetcar...........

West Farms Square, late 1940's; a lot of hustle and bustle going on in this long-ago scene.....

At an unidentified location, we see a prewar TWIN COACH (SURFACE); look closely, and you'll see TARS rails and overhead wires......

This prewar SURFACE bus (MACK) displays the same, angular utilitarian toughness that made it a contemporary with the YELLOW 740's of that era........

I'm pleased to see that you used the term prewar for the Twin in Mount Vernon (NOT Surface Transit as labeled, but probably Westchester Street Transportation on Route C). I am also pleased to see the label "pre-war" on 610 on Melrose Avenue. When the postwar TARS routes of Manhattan and The Bronx were motorized, the buses used were new from the factory. The old prewar fleets were left on the prewar routes.

Joe:

Thanks for the compliment! Wink

In my area of NJ, nearly 60 years ago, the only TWINS I remember were those that were operated in Jersey City by a couple of the "indy" outfits (even then, these buses were in the minority).

No company in my area ever operated postwar TWINS; I am now wondering when SURFACE retired those odd-looking VERSARE buses that they were operating, back in the 1930's.

The newest equipment ever operated by SURFACE were the Fishbowls (TDH-5301's); there were only 50 of these buses in the SURFACE fleet.

The Fishbowls mostly saw service on the #31; most of the other routes rarely (if ever) saw these new buses*.........

In Manhattan, the new buses also ran on the M-104 and M-106 routes. As well, five of the ten FACL A/C Fishbowls (6-10) were rebranded Surface Transit for use on certain high-travelled, "prestige" routes. So basically they had 55 new buses, including 5 that were originally branded as FACL.
