1953 is the date for this bustling scene at 149th St., in the shadow of the 3rd Avenue El (another SURFACE bus also lurks under the elevated).....

These 149th St. 3rd Avenue El photos date to 1973, the year the venerable elevated line was closed down.

MaBSTOA buses can be seen beneath the El structure......

Gun Hill Rd, 1973.

Note Lo-V train on the lower level, obviously "museum" cars on a farewell fantrip (recall, the prewar IRT cars on the Bronx 3rd Avenue El were retired in 1969)

Also, note the blanked-off a/c unit on the two-tone blue Fishbowl down below......

204th St. (3rd Avenue El), 1969, shortly before the last prewar IRT cars were replaced with R-12 cars.

On the right, note the MaBSTOA Fishbowl, still sporting the classic MaBSTOA script over the windows.......

3rd Avenue at 53rd, 1947.

In this snowy, scene a SURFACE bus (MACK) can just be glimpsed under the El, heading away from the camera.......

Looking west on 42nd St., 1955.

Note the new '55 FORD station wagon and '55 Chevy taxi; a SURFACE Old Look is seen in the foreground, with a MACK a little further ahead.

Another bus can just be glimpsed under the El structure; a few others can also be seen in the far distance, on the left.

Also, to further date this nostalgic photo, note the fabled AUTOMAT on the left.......

Here's a rare and unusual picture (taken in 1931) that I just came across that I wanted to share here with you fellows, even if it is a bit "off topic"; note the top of a passing bus in front of the stolid 3rd Avenue El's substation at 34th St. (the structure still survives today, used as a yeshiva).......

Houston St., 1955.

Here we see veteran YELLOW #463 sporting its rebuilt Old Look-style front end, near the 3rd Avenue El......

And those buses handled crosstown routes of lesser areas, well into the point of the 1962 strike that kayoed Fifth Avenue Coach Lines. (I saw pics taken in 1959 or thereabouts that had these buses on the 14th Street line - and lettered 'FIFTH AVENUE COACH LINES INC.' Another I saw from 1960 of them on the 8th Street crosstown with FACL branding on the sides.)

Looks like on the right, one of the '53 or '54 GM Old Looks purchased by Surface . . . I saw farther away a Mack . . .

Now there's incongruity for ya. A soon-to-be demolished el remnant with the then-new T6H-5309A put into service. (Only 20 were initially allotted to Manhattan, exclusively at the Hudson depot where they plied the M11, M16 and other routes assigned there for years.)
