W.B.:

Interesting! Wink

I think it goes without saying that the "Borough Bombers" had the shortest career of any "Tee-Yay" or "Em-Tee-Ay" bus.

Imagine, though, if you will, what if the "Borough Bombers" had been as well-built and as reliable as the RTS.......they surely would have then put in many more years of service, had the fates so dictated.....

Of the many players who passed through the Yankees over the years, which one would be the equivalent of the Old Looks, which one to the Fishbowls, which to the 'Dangerfields' - and which to the 'Borough Bombers'? There has to be some that qualify in that regard . . . at least one Yank who was considered the 'next big thing' who flamed out almost immediately . . .

W.B.:

Did not know tonight's Mets game was cancelled*.....thanks for the heads up.

You brought up some interesting comments.

The "Bambino" most assuredly belonged to the streetcar era; Rizzuto, Synder, Reese, Robinson, The Mick, and Yogi Berra, all belonged to the Old Look/MACK era (recall, Brooklyn streetcars were still running in 1956, one year before "Dem Bums" moved out west to LA)

Too, when the very first Fishbowls entered service, the Mets weren't even around!

It IS sobering to think, over the decades, at how many of the "Bombers" and "The Amazin's" have since passed on to that big ballpark in the sky. Crying or Very sad

Too, the Yankee Stadium of today is but a replica, while the hallowed Shea Stadium is no more, replaced by the generic CitiField.

Even the RTS is now history; think of the lineups for the Bombers and the Amazins that has lost so many since the days when these buses first entered MTA service......

"NYO"

*(Just heard on 1010 WINS that the Mets game for tonight is still on (let's see if this info is correct!) Very Happy

IMHO, this is the most atmospheric and melancholy of all "Dangerfield" photos.......

https://www.nycsubway.org/perl/show?153959

(courtesy: nycsubway.org)

The original Yankee Stadium, like MaBSTOA "Dangerfield" #4697 (photo caption gives wrong number), has since passed down the echoing corridors of history.

Too, think of how many of the "Bombers"* (and their fans) have passed on to their rewards since this moody, haunting and timeless photo was snapped in 1973......

"NYO"

*Just heard on 1010 WINS News Radio that today (7/30) is "Old Timers" day at Yankee Stadium; I am sure many of "the faithful" will be more than feeling their age, when they recall the days when today's "old timers" were yesterday's "out on the field" players......

The great "Bronx Bomber" Yogi Berra retired in 1963; the "Tee-Yay" and MaBSTOA were still operating "classics" (Old Looks/MACKS); Fishbowls were becoming more and more commonplace on the streets of "Noo Yawk".

Yogi went over to the Mets in 1965 as a coach (and, later, briefly, as a player); "Dangerfields" were now becoming a part of the great, vast "Noo Yawk" fleets, and Old Looks and MACKS were still in service.

The "Tee-Yay" (in '65) was still operating a sizeable fleet of prewar subway cars (mostly on the BMT and IND), and the venerable Myrtle Avenue El, with its ancient wooden "Q" cars, was still rattling windows along the Myrtle Avenue line......

Just came across this interesting and colorful page on the late, great, Yogi Berra.....

https://pophistorydig.com/topics/tag/yogi-berra-yoo-hoo

Back in the 60's, I still remember the "Yoo-Hoo" commercials with Yogi on tv (usually on WNEW and WPIX); I also remember a large "Yogi for Yoo-Hoo" billboard above the old open-air terminal at 14th St. in Hoboken, serving the old Washington St. b uses.

I also remember his ads for Ballantine on the subways, way, way back.......

Note the 1953-era CHESTERFIELD ad featuring Yogi Berra; it is easy to imagine this ad displayed inside any "Noo Yawk" subway car of that time..... Wink

The (incorrect) date given for this classic SURFACE-era photo (at Yankee Stadium) is 1955; in the background, check out the taxi sporting tailfins, which would date this picture to about 1957 or 1958, at least.

When this photo was snapped (circa-1957/1958) you would have had Yogi, "The Mick", and Whitey Ford on the "Bombers" roster.......

Our good friend MaBSTOA 15 posted this timeless photo elsewhere, quite awhile back.

This photo taken at Yankee Stadium seems to date to about 1950; note the number of SURFACE buses; also, in the distance, a FLXIBLE Clipper can be glimpsed (I'm sure a large number of the folks in this VERY crowded photo arrived/departed via the subway and SURFACE).....
