Sidenote:

On this day in 1972, Mets fans suffered a great loss with the passing of the great Gil Hodges. Sad

RIP, Mr. Hodges, may Mets fans never forget your tremendous impact on the game............

"GO, METS!!" Very Happy

After a rain delay, the Amazins' scored a 5/1 victory at their season opener in DC......somehow, I don't think there were any Washington-area fans heading home on WAMATA that were too happy..... Rolling Eyes

Dang good to see the Amazins' play their season opener for 2022 and WIN!! Very Happy

.............last night, surely, fans of the Amazins, whether going home via #7 subway, bus, or private auto, were indeed in (to say the least!) a VERY happy mood last evening, on a historic night for those "Amazin New York Mets" (who, btw, not only have won four out of the last five games, but also, won their season and home openers, won a double-header, and swept the Nationals)......now, THIS is what a Mets season should be like! Wink

Apparently, it ain't just the Mets on fire at this time (thank you, Buck Showalter!) - so are the Yankees. For both teams, we'll see what happens down the road, but . . . for now . . .

W.B.:

Agreed, 100%.

Both teams are running hot (even if you are not a fan of "Da Bronx Bombers") its great seeing both "Noo Yawk" major league teams "running hot" as of late!) Wink

Last night, the Mets really lived up to their long-established nickname, "The Amazins".....'nuff said! Very Happy

And that's the thing. "Noo Yawk" has had better luck, relatively speaking, on the baseball front, especially of late, than with basketball, hockey or football. (And on the last-named, you have to go to "Joisey" for that!)

W.B.:

If one is from "Noo Yawk" (or anywhere near the city) I truly cannot see why a "fan" cannot root for BOTH home teams; IMHO, one can be fiercely loyal to a given team, but STILL "rejoice" when either of the "Noo Yawk" teams win.

The Mets have long reminded me of modern-day Brooklyn Dodgers; they have always had a strong "underdog" aura to them (IMHO), and that, I feel, makes you want to root all the more for these modern-day "Bums" (aka "Loveable Losers")

Sadly, the Amazins' got hammered last night, but, even the most "off to the side" Mets fan (that's Your's Truly!) knows that when the make a comeback, they'll come back "swingin"! Wink

Reading of the long-ago "Noo Yawk" baseball players in a "historical "Noo Yawk" context", my all-time fave Brooklyn Dodgers players were The Duke, Pee Wee Resse, and, of course, the legendary Jackie Robinson.

Players like Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig have, indeed, acquired "larger than life" legend status through the decades.

And, of course, can we ever forget those old "Money Store" TV commercials, years ago, with Phil Rizzuto?

I still regret not going out to the hallowed Shea and catch at least one Mets game, back when the Redbirds were still running.

Then again, if I could travel back in time, I sure wouldn't mind hanging from a strap inside a jammed IRT Hi-V or Lo-V, on my way to "The House That Ruth Built", to catch an early/mid-50's Yankee game...... Wink

1972.....and there is a distinct feeling of "Lost Noo Yawk" here.

Fishbowls and "Dangerfields" both have long since departed from the city's streets, while the "House That Ruth Built" has also since passed into history, replaced by a "new and improved" version.

Too, how many of the '72 Yankees have since passed on to that great bullpen in the sky.......

........though most fans heading to Yankee Stadium (then and now) arriving via public transportation would be taking the subways, it would be interesting to kget an idea how many came (or still come) to the Stadium via bus.

It would seem a given that most Mets fans not taking their cars would have taken the IRT #7 line, with some arriving via bus.....

1950's SURFACE buses (also seen in the distance) at Yankee Stadium; "1955" photo date is incorrect.......on the right, note the tail-finned taxi, which would date this nostalgic view to at least 1957......

Grand Concourse, 1982.......

Am curious....did the ill-fated GRUMMANS ever operate on any route that served Yankee Stadium?

They wouldn't have. The Bx49 which went there, was based out of West Farms depot - where no Grummans were ever assigned, that I know of. Only Coliseum and Kingsbridge, amongst Bronx depots, got the benighted 870's (talk about Dangerfields - the 'New Look' Flxies had all the respect in the world compared with the Grummans).

W.B;

Thanks for this info; this was just what I wanted to know.

Agreed; the "Dangerfields" indeed garnered much more in the way of "respect" than the infamous GRUMMANS.

That the "Dangerfields" weren't, literally, falling apart while in service speaks many volumes as to why even the lowly "Dangerfields" received more respect than the GRUMMANS, which, unlike the unfortunate GRUMMANS, enjoyed long service lives with both the "Tee-Yay" and the "Em-Tee-Yay".......

Another route, as I may've mentioned early on in this thread, that served "The Stadium" was the Bx34 - which was assigned out of Kingsbridge, and thus the Grumman "Bombers" would have probably gone to where the "Bronx Bombers" played if these misbegotten coaches had been assigned to that route.
