As part of that project, I believe there will be four tracks between the tunnels and Newark...

traildriver:

This, indeed, would make a great deal of sense, and, most certainly, be of tremendous operational value if one or more tracks/tubes had to be taken OOS.

Hard to believe that both the tunnels and the embankment across the Meadows have now been in use for 111 years now! Shocked

It is interesting to remember, that, while the mighty PRR was indeed "The Standard Railroad Of The World", it was Mr. McAdoo's humble H&MRR ("The Tubes") that operated the first trans-Hudson rail tunnels (the uptown tubes opened in 1908, and the downtown tubes opened in 1909)

I have also read that there were plans to "four track" the downtown H&M tubes; in actuality, this would have entailed building an additional set of tubes from Hudson Terminal, which would have made landfall near the ERIE/PAVONIA station in Jersey City.......

On January 28, 1935, the new, majestic, monolithic GG-1 made a test run from DC's Union Station to Philadelphia (and return)

A proud #4800 led this special train; a portion of the run was clocked at 102 MPH.

Following this run, #4800 was put on public display at New York, Newark, Wilmington, Baltimore, Trenton and Washington.

In February, 1935, eastbound and westbound "CONGESSIONALS", powered by the new G's, left Washington and New York respectively.

The most prestigious and colorful era of PRR electrification had begun....hard to believe that these events took place nearly 90 years ago.......

.......the immortal GG-1's (what remained of them) nearly made it to the 50th anniversary of their entering service in 1935; NJT retired the last in 1983, just ten months shy of their 50th service year.

By this late date, NJT rostered 13 of the G's; however, only 6 of those 13 were in operation, with only 3 actually operating.

The GG1's rostered by ConRail bowed out in 1979; those still on the AMTRAK roster were retired in 1981........

If you are going to talk about old Amtrak equipment...how about this 'survivor'? Smile

http://www.trainweb.org/amtrakpix/locoshots/mp15/AMTK737A.html

It's been alive for about 80 (!) years, and counting....

traildriver:

AMAZING....but NOT surprising; those old switchers were virtually indestructable!!!! Shocked Shocked

I'm glad you posted this photo; in talking about AMTRAK, its motive power and rolling stock, we all too often forget the "supporting players", such as switchers.

The basic design of switchers had changed little over the decades, they always seemed "familiar", no matter how many year had gone by.

Back in the 1960's, the E-L's switchers assigned to duty at the Hoboken terminal were always on the go; these doughty little machines were kept busy at all hours, shunting head-end cars, commuter coaches, and through equipment.

After through E-L service vanished, and all non-MU runs were covered by push-pulls, there was not all the much need for switchers at Hoboken, but they still were required when moving dead equipment around.

Back around 1985, I remember seeing an AMTRAK switcher coupling to a dead E-60 at Penn Station, Newark; I remember that the consist (eastbound) was empty.

AFAIK, the disabled train was going to be towed straight through to Sunnyside.

And, yes, the "Little Engine That Could" got the job done, as usual........ Wink Wink

Salt Lake City, 1988.

Note the obviously fresh paint job displayed by this veteran, and the car body devoid of any markings, lettering, or numbers ..........

AMTRAK in the news............

As of late, AMTRAK has been very much in the news; funding has been allocated for long-delayed "GATEWAY" Hudson River tunnel project, as well as the replacing of the old "PORTAL" bridge.

I cannot help but wonder if Your's Truly will still be around, when that monumental project is FINALLY completed, after so many years of delays and setbacks, before all work stopped altogether.

I have often wondered if AMTRAK might ever revive the old "TurboTrain"/"Turboliner" trainset concept.

Too, it is also interesting to think about just what the AMTRAK of 2023 might have been like, had there not been so many cutbacks and funding issues, over the course of the past several decades (hard to believe that AMTRAK has now surpassed it's 50th birthday!)

Another thing I often ponder vis what will eventually become of non-NEC services, given the many headaches and tribulations of operating passenger trains over the rails of private freight carriers, especially with intercity bus operations now a mere shadow of what they were, fifty years ago, and the many issues currently plaguing both the airlines and the airports.......

I guess only time will tell..................

"Back to the future"..........

Recall, pre-AMTRAK, when the sleek new "METROLINER" entered service on Penn-Central rails, supposedly heralding the new era in high-speed rail service, back in the late 1960's?

For many reasons, neither the already-ailing PC, nor AMTRAK (in later years) ever saw a roster boasted a dozen (or more) "MTEROLINER" trainsets.

Indeed, it was all quite flashy and futuristic when it debuted (recall the novelty of on-board public phones!); bt how fast the glittering visions of the future turned into mundane reality.

In later years, "METROLINER" became but the name of an AMTRAK service only, instead of a certain train.

The control cars were converted to non-electric cab cars, away from the NEC.

Interestingly, these sleek trains DID have a profound impact on AMTRAK; it was these very same trains that inspired the iconic "AMFLEET" cars, first introduced in the 1970's, and still in use today.

These now-iconic coaches have now become an integral part of the AMTRAK story, which now spans more than a half-century................

Sad----------- a good chunk of the ACELA fleet are now OOS-as these units are being cannibalized to keep the rest of the fleet in operation (these trains also-going by what Your's Truly has learned-do not take kindly to cold weather!); on the other side of the pond-there are the SUD-EST high-speed trains that were running close to 40 years (too-think of the iconic GG-1; these proud and powerful engines ran just shy of 50 years!)----now----one cannot help but wonder as to just how reliable the new ACELA trainsets will be------when they enter the fleet in the future (supposedly-the new units are to appear during 2024)----"NYO"
