Speaking of the B&O's low-clearance "Strata-Domes".......
I've long wondered if thee cars were low enough to enter the CNJ's Bush sheds at Jersey City?
To date, I've never seen any photos showing B&O domes at Jersey City, nor have I ever heard any mention of these cars "under the sheds" at Jersey City.
With no CNJ tunnels, it would seem that clearances would have been sufficient enough to allow the passage of the"'Strata Domes"; again, I do not know if they would have been low enough to enter the CNJ's trainsheds at Jersey City.
Even though I know that "THE COLUMBIAN" did not serve Jersey City, I still wonder if, perhaps, one of the cars was at least displayed at Jersey City, to demonstrate the low clearances of the new domes......

Dome cars in general......
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dome_car *
*This is a very interesting page; note that the earliest "ancestor" of the dome car dates back to 1882 (CB&Q)......... |

If you scroll down about half way, you'll find a table with the various versions of domes and their overall heights above the rails....

Thanks for this link; I'll enjoy going through it later on!
Re: the spotlights on the B&O "Strata-Domes"; cars thus equipped would have made for some spectacular nighttime scenes along the DL&W/E-L, when the trains were passing through the Poconos....
Had the NYC had B&O-style "low domes" (w/spotlights) it would have likewise made for some truly beautiful and memorable nighttime viewing along the Hudson......

Two domes are visible in this sea of classic streamlined equipment, filling the ex-SF coach yards at Chicago, 1972.......

"Full Domes" had a distinction all their own; in this timeless 1972 scene, we see an ex-SF dome-lounge.......

Chicago, 1974.
With a large-scale demolition project going on in the background, we see some intense AMTRAK action, brimming with classic motive power and vintage rolling stock.
This is one of my all-time favorite vintage AMTRAK photos.......

....as all know by now, President-elect Biden will not be arriving to his inuaguaration on Wednesday, via AMTRAK, due to the high risks of attacks en route.
Sad.
It was going to be quite refreshing to see a new President arrive in DC via the rails; I had heard that the locomotives assigned to his train had already been decorated and prepared for the trip.
Though I regret not seeing Mr. Biden's arrival in DC via the train, I am relieved that safety concerns, above anything else, were heeded.
There cannot be too much security, AFAIK, in these uncertain times.........

The eye-catching "BEECH GROVE", back in 1987; this car clearly evokes a "whistle stop era" campaign special, back in the days when campaigning by rail was still commonplace (just imagine if certain AMTRAK trains each carried cars like this at the tail end of the consist! Like all observation cars, the cost of turning the cars at the end of the line would be an expense that AMTRAK, I'm sure, would have been happy to do without)
Back in 1988, Joe Biden, during his bid for the presidency, "rear platform campaigned", via AMTRAK; Biden and Obama also campaigned by rail together, when the former was running for President........
