More on ex-MTA buses operating on Bergenline Avenue routes.....

Recall the the GRUMMANS which went to NJT, after refurbishing.

These would have been the first ex-MTA buses to run on Union City-area routes, many years prior to ACADEMY purchasing ex-MTA RTS units and operating them on the "#22".......

New York Avenue & 31st Street, Union City, 1981......

https://www.nycsubway.org/perl/show?155423

Franmar #107, operating on an outbound "#22" run to Cliffside Park, is on New York Avenue, heading north (the highway approaches to the Lincoln Tunnel (known locally as the "tunnel cuts") are below street level, as is evidenced by the railings)

The "#22" buses would travel north along New York Avenue (which becomes a single-lane thoroughfare north of this location) to 48th St., where the buses would then swing left, and travel several blocks west to Bergenline Avenue, where they would turn north.

Just out of this photo, in the right background, were the sprawling ex-PS "carbarns", then being used by NJT.......

Many years ago, TRAILWAYS maintained a "storefront" depot/ticket office on 32nd St. in Union City, just off Bergenline Avenue.

Today, on 32nd St., there is the depot/ticket office of "LA CUBANA OMNIBUS".......

Interestingly, Bergenline Avenue is a wide thoroughfare, with two-way traffic extending from Nungessers (North Bergen) all the way down to 48th St. in Union City.

From there, Bergenline Avenue becomes a one-way street, which, of course, translates into quite a bit of congestion, especially during peak-hour traffic.

PSNJ's "#44 BERGENLINE" (Nungessers-Journal Square) had the distinction of being the first HUDSON Division line (in the Union City area) to receive Fishbowls in the early 1960's.

Back in the old days, the ORANGE & BLACK operated several routes into the PABT, via Bergenline Avenue; these buses, along with those of PS, could make for quite heavy bus traffic during the rush hours.

Also, there was the "#22", which, in later years (prior to the NJT takeover) was privately operated.........

Note that, at the present time, there are only two services out of the GWB Terminal that currently serve the Bergenline Avenue corridor; these are NJT's "#181" (limited service only), and the jitneys of "Spanish Transportation"......
