Historical note.....

The last PSNJ streetcars ran along Bergenline Avenue (from 48th St.) in August, 1949; these were the cars of the "UNION CITY" line, which operated between the NYCRR's West Shore ferry terminal in Weehawken, and the DL&W/H&M station in Hoboken.

Prior to 1939, streetcars also ran along the upper portion of Bergenline Avenue (above 48th St.) to Nungessers (North Bergen); the cars of the "NORTH BERGEN" and "WEST NEW YORK" lines were converted to buses in 1938........

In this 1940's view of the interior of the main repair shop of PSNJ's carbarns at Union City, you can see both streetcars and different bus models, of assorted vintages.

Note the older bus in the left foreground, signed for the "22 HILLSIDE"; at the time of this photo, the "#22" was operated by PSNJ.

This photo is looking southwest, towards the Bergenline Avenue end of the facility......

Here's an interesting (and timeless) scene at Nungessers, taken in 1981.

Nearest the camera, we see ex-PSNJ/TNJ #W731, signed for the #166; as both the #165 and #166 did not run through North Hudson Park, as this bus was clearly about to do, there must have been a need for a detour.

Trailing this bus is an M&G Flex New Look, heading for Hoboken on the #22 line.

On the right, is an ex-ORANGE & BLACK Fishbowl, heading north to Fairview, Cliffside Park, and Fort Lee (via Anderson Avenue)

Scenes like this are forever etched in my memory......

On this day in 1981, we see ex-PSNJ/TNJ Fishbowl #X345, assigned to the "#44 BERGENLINE" run, which terminated at Nungessers (during rush hours, at that time, certain rush hour runs were extended beyond Nungessers, as far north as Palisades Junction. This practice has long since been abolished)

To the left (east) of the bus is North Hudson Park ("Hudson County Park" to locals); until 1938, streetcars of PSNJ's "PALISADE" line crossed the park's lake via a high wooden trestle, which was torn down some time after the cars stopped running.

There was also another "#44" line, which ran on Park Avenue.......

Seen at Journal Square in 1973 (at the former PS terminal on Sip Avenue, Jersey City), TNJ first-generation Fishbowl #R321 (still carrying its original PS insignia), is signed for the "#44 PARK AVENUE".

The former PS office building/showroom adjacent to the unloading platform still survives today (as does its protective canopy), now used as a college facility.

The old PS terminal, after the PATH Center opened in 1974, became a commuter's parking lot, in which capacity it served for many years.

This once-busy site is now vacant.

The "#44" lines were always among PS's busiest on the HUDSON Division; also, note the GREYHOUND station on Sip Avenue.......

Very early in the NJT era, ex-PSNJ/TNJ #X387 is seen laying over at the end of the "#44 BERGENLINE" route, at North Hudson Park.

Soon, the bus will be ready to swing around, and head back (south) down busy Bergenline Avenue, to connect with the PATH tubes at Journal Square.......

Here is an excellent page on Bergenline Avenue (includes a few photos):

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bergenline_Avenue

It is stated here that it is the longest commercial street in New Jersey; several NJT bus routes are also mentioned here.

There is mention also about the frequency of bus service; the vast army of vans must be taken into account here, as they far outnumber NJT buses, even during rush hours.

Also, compare the photo at the top right of the page, showing 32nd St. looking g north up Bergenline Avenue, with the photos taken at the same location, in the late 1940's and early 1980's........

*This is an interesting page; note that NJT now has only two divisions, the NORTHERN Division and the SOUTHERN Division.

Back in the PS days, northern New Jersey operations included the BERGEN, HUDSON, ESSEX, and CENTRAL Divisions.......

Until the 1970's, Cliffside Park boasted a small, off-street "open air" bus terminal (Anderson Avenue, off Lafayette), serving buses of the "#22" (then privately owned) and the "#21" (TNJ); during rush-hours, certain "#44" (also TNJ) runs also loaded here.

A "starter" was also on the premises; I remember this terminal well, and used it daily as part of my commute to my senior year (1974-1975).

Today, a bank and a parking lot occupy the space once used by the buses; these days, only older area residents would remember this long-gone terminal.

The buses that served this terminal all utilized Bergenline Avenue for a good portion of their runs......

On a sunny day in 1981, this ex-ORANGE & BLACK Fishbowl (#665) is making its first stop in Union City, just out of the Lincoln Tunnel.

Just out of the picture to the left is/was the TRAILWAYS ticket office/station.

The (outbound) ORANGE & BLACK buses, as well as those running on the #22, would swing northwards onto New York Avenue, and take this narrow, strangulated, congested thoroughfare up to 48th St.; there, the buses would swing westwards (left-hand turn) to Bergenline Avenue, where they would then swing right, and, thence, onto Bergenline.........

Here's another nostalgic Bergenline Avenue scene from 1981.

An ex-ORANGE & BLACK Fishbowl, just a few minutes away from the Lincoln Tunnel, is seen here heading south on Bergenline Avenue.

Back then, the "van invasion" years were still quite a ways into the future.

Buses, exclusively, then dominated the busy Bergenline Avenue corridor.

PSNJ's "UNION CITY LINE" had the distinction of being the last streetcar line to run through the Bergenline Avenue shopping district in Union City.

Until August, 1949, streetcars outbound from the West Shore Terminal at Weehawken (heading to the DL&W terminal in Hoboken) would climb up the steep grade (private ROW) to Boulevard East; the cars would then travel west along 48th Street, and then swing south (left-hand turn) onto Bergenline Avenue.

The Compromise roof car seen here (#2808) is equipped with the distinctive "bug eye" marker lights that all PSNJ streetcars based at the UNION CITY car house sported, due to a Union City ordinance then on the books.

Here, #2808, has just crossed Boulevard East, and is about to enter the private ROW, leading down to the West Shore ferry terminal.

PS buses continued to serve this terminal until it closed in 1959......

Here, an ex-TNJ (NJDOT) Flex New Look is on Bergenline Avenue, at 85th St., adjacent to North Hudson Park (NJT's paint schemes never did anything for me, btw)

Near Nungessers, the bustling Bergenline Avenue shopping district was a number of blocks to the south.......

Ex-MTA buses on Bergenline Avenue.......

Sometime in the 1990's, ACADEMY purchased some used RTS buses from the MTA; I knew these buses were ex-MTA by the stickers on the seats, advising riders to give up their seats for the handicapped.

I often rode these buses on the "#22", prior to NJT taking over the line........

Here is an unusual photo from 1981......

https://www.nycsubway.org/perl/show?155362

(courtesy: nycsubway.org)

In this interesting 1981 photo, we see ex-PSNJ/TNJ suburban Fishbowl (note the sightseeing-type roof windows) "#V706" on Bergenline Avenue (I still well remember "LITTLE AL's BARGAINLAND"; also note the once commonplace fire alarm/police call box on the corner, even then quite antiquated)

The buses PS/TNJ used on Bergenline Avenue "local" routes were all transit models w/rear doors; oddly enough, however, for a period in the early 80's, I can remember riding suburban Fishbowls on the "#21" several times.

Obviously, some sort of equipment shifting was then taking place, in the early NJT era; no matter, Your's truly certainly had no complaints! Wink
