The magnificent, majestic, and beautiful Fresnel lens, the glittering eye of lighthouses around the globe, beginning in the mid-1800's.

Some of these historic lenses are still in use today; these handsome glass lenses were indeed light-years ahead of their day......

The largest and most impressive of the Fresnel lens were the monolithic "Hyperradiant" lenses; these majestic and towering lenses were installed in 31 lighthouses around the world.

Some of these priceless optics are still in use today.......

Way back in the day, the mighty, legendary Hudson was often known as "The North River"*........

*This is an excellent page (with maps and photos) tracing the history of the Hudson from the earliest days........

Speaking of "navigation" in New York Harbor......

The CNJ (Jersey Central) was the only railroad that operated trans-Hudson ferryboats to equip its fleet with short range radar.

The Staten Island Ferry's older boats (the "DONGAN HILLS" and the "MISS NEW YORK" classes) were retrofitted with radar after the new "MERRELL" Class boats began entering service in the early 1950's.

The "MERRELL" Class had the distinction of being the first new Staten Island boats to enter service equipped with radar (they were also the last steam ferries to operate in NY Harbor).......

While on the fascinating and intriguing subject of marine radar; the following excerpt is from Brian J. Cudhay's "AROUND MANHATTAN ISLAND", published in 1997 (here, Mr. Cudahy is on the bridge of the massive cruise ship "DREAMWARD")......

".......one can shift from short range to long range, simply by touching the appropriate icons on the screen, and, also, if I'm not mistaken, can call up "instant replays" of what the radar was showing five, ten, fifteen minutes ago....."

".....when the staff captain called for a long-range reading, there on a cathode ray tube, emerged a perfect map of Coney Island........"

"The Port":

This is an excellent "in depth" page, including history, maps, charts, photos, etc; there are also a few lighthouse photos here......

An excellent and most interesting page on container ships/shipping:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Container_ship

One could only imagine how the lighthouse keepers and "skippers" of yesterday would react if they could have traveled to 2020 and encountered even one of these massive, monolithic, seagoing vessels*...... Shocked Shocked Shocked

"NYO"

*NEVER ceases to amaze me as to how anything this HUGE can FLOAT.....(!!) Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked

.......talking about harbor navigation reminded me of the days when "Noo Yawk" was the undisputed tugboat capital of the world; there were so many private tug companies, back in the days, and virtually every railroad that then served the harbor area owned sizeable tug fleets.

With harbor traffic a mere whisper of what it was 60 years ago, and the big cruise ships virtually independent of tugs, it is an easy guess that the NY Harbor tug population today in 2021 is but a miniscule shadow, of what it was, several decades ago.......

A brief mention must also be made of the Coast Guard facility on the Hudson at Turkey Point, NY, which opened in 1938.

Supply boats, serving the lighthouses in the area that were then in use, docked here.

Buoys were also maintained here; this included both painting and general maintenance.

This once-busy facility was closed decades ago; it also featured a warehouse...........

Mention "West Point" to most people, and a lighthouse is generally not the first image that comes to their mind.........
