All:

Back in the long-ago days when New York Harbor traffic thronged with ferryboats, tugs, barges, lighters, liners, freighters, and tankers, there were once many lighthouses that helped to guide the vessels safely into (and out of) port.

Many do not know that Lady Liberty herself, early on, was once classified as a "navigational guide" (the beacon, here, was her torch) by the United States Lighthouse Board.

The "red, fat, and jolly", famed and beloved, "Little Red Lighthouse" (Jeffery's Hook), in the shadow of the "Great Gray Bridge" (The GW) was originally a "range light", and was situated at a location far to the south of its present location.

Until the late 1940's, a Victorian-era lighthouse functioned off Bayonne, NJ; when the channel was widened, the lighthouse was destroyed, and replaced with a "skeleton tower".

Staten Island, also was no stranger to lighthouses.

Recall, also, the stalwart "Robbins Reef Light" which has safely guided Staten Island ferries (as well as other harbor and seagoing vessels) since the late 19th century.

Thus, let us pay homage to these steadfast beacons of yore......

The interesting history of the famed "Little Red Lighthouse"*; this diminiutive lighthouse was once a familiar beacon to the ferryboat skippers on the 125th St. and Dyckman Street crossings, not to mention the many excursion and night boats, tugs, barges, and other craft........

*(until 1917, "Little Red" was part of the "Sandy Hook Range" lights)

"ELM TREE BEACON LIGHT" (Staten Island).

Long OOS, the present (1939) Art Deco tower was most unusual, in that it served both marine and air traffic*......

https://em.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elm_Tree_Beacon_Light

*Interestingly, when this tower was in use, it utilized an alternating white and green light as a guide to aircraft, and a white light for the Swash Channel.

The light was taken out of service in 1964........

The top of a Lower Manhattan skyscraper, indeed, seems a most unlikely (and unorthodox!) location for a lighthouse, but this little beacon indeed sat atop the old Seaman's Church Institute, until the 1960's.

Thankfully, after the building was demolished, the lighthouse itself was preserved, and, today, stands proudly at ground level at the South Street Seaport Museum.......
