Thanks for the links. The lights I saw in the 1960's were apparently leading lights, and they do not show up on the NOAA charts now. I wonder whether such lights can be found at other locations around metropolitan NY. |

Joe:
This is an interesting question; at this point, your guess would be as good as mine.
Always etched in my mind is the beacon on Governor's Island; just after 911, when the PATH tubes to downtown were knocked out, and I still was a bit leery on riding the subways, I took the ferries (from the Battery and, later, Pier 11) to Hoboken.
The Governor's Island beacon was something I would always be sure I looked for when I was on the ferry.
In discussing lighthouses, etc., "skeleton towers" are often neglected; though they are strictly utilitarian, and have no "romance" about them, they still, nonetheless are interesting, and, of course, most important to maritime traffic......

.......A book I purchased in a shop at Port Jefferson, NY, many years ago, is a must for anyone interested in NY-area lighthouses, their histories, as well as their histories; this book is "LIGHTS & LEGENDS, A HISTORICAL GUIDE TO THE LIGHTHOUSES OF LONG ISLAND SOUND, FISHERS ISLAND SOUND, AND BLOCK ISLAND SOUND" (by Harlan Hamilton)
There is also much here on the various types of optics used, types of lights, types of beams, light colors, and much more. This is an excellent book that should be in the library of anyone interested in the navigation of the waters in the greater Long Island area.......

Previously, I mentioned the navigational beacon Governors Island; the following link is to an interesting page on the history and current use of the Island.
It is interesting to note that one of the ferryboats used to service the island is the historic "COURSEN", which has been in service since the 1950's, going back to the days when an Army base was located on the island......

Before the weather buoys, there were "weather ships"; a lot of great information here on these obscure vessels, as well as photos......
