MaBSTOA 15, there was also the newly purchased 255 TDH5303's, 3301-3555 during 1963.

And completing the MaBSTOA GM New Looks, express bus T6H-5310A's 4500-4505 and regular T6H-5309A's 4800-4859 in early 1973, then closing the book with 4860-4919 in the summer. Those no doubt would have replaced the last of the FACL/ST Fishbowls (up to 3220 ex A/C 10).

W.B.:

When were these buses retired?

Were any of these a/c equipped coaches?

Starting with #s 8001-8202 (NYCTA) and #s 8301-8780 (MaBSTOA) acquired in 1967 and models TDH-5303 all future buses would have a/c

As 'MABSTOA 15' noted, all those 1973 buses ordered for MaBSTOA were A/C. Unrebuilt, they lasted to about 1990; as rebuilt by Blitz, the last were retired in 1995.

What I find most interesting is the fact that the Flxible fishbowls were all retired between 1990 and 1993 and not one was rebuilt!

However, Blitz rebuilt 350 GM fishbowls from the same period as the Flxibles including 23 TDH-5303, the first with air-conditioning and bat-wings were rebuilt. As well as, 145 T6H-5305A that came in 1968 and 1970; 10 9 T6H- 5309A that were purchased in 1971 and 1972 and 73 T6H-5310A that also came in 1971 and 1972.

These buses were all retired in 1995.

No, but a few of 'em were renumbered . . .

But there's the answer. Rebuilt, the GM Fishbowls all outlasted the Flxies.

This now-classic picture has long been one of my favorite MaBSTOA views (167 St. & Bryant, 1972)

Note that bedraggled first-generation Fishbowl #3172 has, sadly, been "tagged"; also, note that the bus is carrying no ads, and that the right-hand section of the sign box is blank......

Regarding the previous photo of #3172.......

The roller curtain has me curious; was this some sort of a "custom" sign, previously used on another bus?

Also, the route number "#35" on the left side of the sign box, instead of the right......

IMHO, given the bedraggled state of #3172, it would not be a surprise at all to learn that this bus was one of the first of the first generation "Tee-Yay" Fishbowls to be retired.....

3172 was originally part of the Surface Transit fleet before the MABSTOA takeover. They used split roll signs.

B53RICH:

THANK YOU for this info; I had assumed that #3172 had been a "Tee-Yay" bus right from the get-go.

I had already known that SURFACE rostered 50 TDH-5301's (none painted red); it is interesting to wonder had SURFACE remained independent, how many more Fishbowl they might have bought at a later date, to replace the oldest buses in the fleet......
