Note the subway entrance at left, still sporting its original IND signage from the 1930's (many classic-era signs such as this survived intact for many more years, at certain locations).

The two MaBSTOA Fishbowls (including their advertising) further serve to enhance the overall "Da Bronx" nostalgia of the early 70's...........

To think 3472 once had 'batwings' as a test. But 6704 was one of the 1965-66 batwings swapped out for non-batwings between Manhattan and "da Bronx" around 1967 or so (before then, all 300 non-batwings were spread out among the three Bronx depots, and the 200 batwings were all reserved for Manhattan).

The two street signs, in their typesetting, would date to 1969-70.

W.B.:

One thing that has always puzzled me is how, when "Da Bronx" was quickly plummeting into the clutches of urban decay, that ANY sort of new buses (Fishbowls or "Dangerfields") were even assigned to routes serving that borough.

The "Em-Tee-Yay purchasing the new T6H-5309A's (MaBSTOA) when the 3rd Avenue El was closed down in 1973, made sense, as there had to be SOME reliable alternate transportation for riders who had previously used the El.

As I have said elsewhere, I was always wondering why the "Tee-Yay"/"Em-Tee-YAy" did not assign the remaining Old Looks ("Shermans" to routes serving "Da Bronx", instead of newer buses, given that the borough was rapidly sliding downhill.......

"NO MAN'S LAND" (Hunts Point & Seneca, 1981)

Never ceases to amaze me just how fast "Da Bronx" (and other urban areas) declined so quickly (and so dramatically), in just the course of several years..........

Here's a less "dismal" view from "da Bronx" (Hunts Point Avenue & Bruckner, 1981)

On the right, the old gabled structure housing stores was, until late 1937, the NYW&B's Hunts Point station.

By the time of this photo, it had been decades since the "Westchester's" big green MU's last called here..........

Back when 5330 was part of the 1964-65 set of MaBSTOA buses, and not a Blitz-rebuilt 1972-73 Fishbowl. (Speaking of which, there's 4898, in its original state, trailing right behind.)

Initially, all the 1964-65 MaBSTOA Fishbowl order was confined to Manhattan; must've been around this time that some buses in this order went to 'da Bronx'.

W.B.:

Quick question, regarding the T6H-5309A's (purchased when the 3rd Avenue El closed in 1973).......

When were these buses finally retired?

Were they still operating on the same route(s) they were assigned to when new in '73, or, had they been later re-assigned to other (i.e. non-MABSTOA) routes?

Thanks.....

After their initial assignments, they "got around." Don't forget, some of the 1971 'Tee-Yay' Fishbowls, in the '80's, saw MaBSTOA service, including M16. Unrebuilt, they lasted to about 1993 at the latest; those that were rebuilt by Blitz and renumbered in the 5300's or thereabouts all had their plugs pulled in 1995.

W.B.:

Appreciate the info; I had the feeling that these buses "got around" in later years.

In general, I see my memories are about "in sync" with your info; to my best recollection, is was the mid-90's when the last Fishbowls (and "Dangerfields" disappeared from the streets of "Noo Yawk".

Still hard to believe that the once oh-so-commonplace RTS has now been OOS for a few years, now.....time flies much too quickly for Your's Truly.....

According to the caption of this 1978 photo (Hylan & Allendale) Fishbowl #8474 is a MaBSTOA bus.

Was this one of the MaBSTOA buses that "got around" in later years? (re-assignment, etc.)

8474 was one of the 25 buses assigned to 100th Street depot in upper Manhattan for service on express routes (the M23X, later X23 and even later X90, was based there - and so was the M41 Culture Loop started in '73). It and 18 others (ranged from 8459-8477) were the ones that had express seating added in 1972 - which was why, when MaBSTOA got their allotment of the express-oriented T6H-5310A's came, only six were produced (4500-4505 - in comparison to the huge batch of those custom-produced buses made for the 'Tee-Yay'). No doubt X13's termination point across the way was Manhattan. So it's possible that already there was a swap-a-mole going on by then.

When the first A/C buses were ordered by the city in 1966-67, 8301-8780 were for MaBSTOA service, while the 'Tee-Yay's' lot - which, by serial numbers, were made afterwards - was 8001-8202. Again, 8459-8477 were converted for express bus service, with seating totally rearranged for same.

W.B.:

As usual, your depth of knowledge regarding historical aspects of "Noo Yawk" buses is beyond impressive (perhaps you were a "Tee-Yay" Dispatcher or Traffic Manager, in a past life) Wink

From: NEW YORK CITY TRANSIT BUSES" (Martin).......

"........starting in 1971, some GM T6H-5305A's were delivered with 47 forward-facing seats for new, premium-fare express service between Manhattan and outlying boroughs......"

"........many other buses were later converted, with the increasing popularity of express service. Staten Island saw almost every type of New Look bus delivered, with transfers of small lots from other garages......."

GREATLY appreciate this information; thank you for taking the time to post here! Wink

Regarding batwing buses, I always wondered why not all NYCTA buses were batwing-equipped.

One thing that I always thought of was how solid the mountings had to be, for these huge "wings" to be solidly mounted to the bus bodies (were any re-enforcements required?)

Back in the day, the batwing buses I knew best were the Fishbowls operated by TNJ, through the 1970's (quick question: were the side batwing signs hand-cranked or electric? This might have been discussed awhile ago elsewhere, but am not sure).......
