I think the question as to what about the rear rear side advertising in the back of the bus and when it was eliminated may be answered. It may have stemmed from the late 1968 order of T6H-5305A's for the TA - the Fishbowl version of a 'Dangerfield' (given how few of that generation were ordered, and only by the 'Tee-Yay'). In a pic below, #8926 (on duty on the R-9X express bus) shows only two ad racks on its side, instead of three.

Here's battle-scarred MaBSTOA Old Look #2690 alongside a "Tee-Yay" green"Dangerfield", back in 1970 (was this location a depot/storage yard?).........

In the past, we've spoken at length about certain bygone "Noo Yawk" buses, while using appropriate monikers*, i.e."Dangerfields", "Boro Bombers", etc.

Recall the veteran, and time honored R-10 IND subway cars, often known as the "Pattons", due to their solid, rugged, tank-like construction.

Given that, the Old Looks (though in use for far less a time than the R-10's) should be referred to as "Panziers" (also "Thunderbirds"), given their own solid, rugged, appearance and many years of reliable service.

Within the "Panzier" classification, there was also a notable sub-class, the distinctive "Bulgies"........ Wink

*Recall, eons ago, NY Rys center-entrance "hobbleskirt" streetcars were dubbed "Broadway Battleships"; one of the IRT's "Lo-V's series were known as 'Flivvers".

Interestingly, the moniker "Broadway Battleship" also was used to describe NY Rys. monolithic, experimental double-deck car (#6000), back about 1912.

With the parked buses on the left, and the sprawling brick building in the background, I thought that this must be a garage/yard of the "old school", very much reminiscent of many such facilities here in "Joisey", in my much younger years.....

In this January, 1971 photo, we see MaBSTOA "Panzier" (sub-class "Bulgy") #2666 still looking fairly decent, despite running out the last miles.

Note that the sign box is empty, and no ad cards are being carried.....

In this depressing scene from 1981 (162nd & Park) MaBSTOA Fishbowl #8357 clearly seems to be in better shape than the dismal, decaying neighborhood it is rolling through......

NEVER ceases to amaze me as to how the "Em-Tee-Yay's" bus fleet (compared to the subways) escaped the massive scourage of the graffiti that defaced every piece of rolling stock then in service.

I personally remember those days; to say it was a hideous and tasteless "expression" of "urban art" is indeed a gross understatement.

That so many buses were stored indoors at their respective garages, and not all sitting exposed and vunerable in yards (like the subway cars), I am sure, played a huge part in keeping the buses (relatively) scrawl-free........

When this timeless and classic IRT scene caught on film, way back in 1962, no one could have ever guessed that, in the not-too-distant future, graffiti and crime would be sending the subways into a tailspin.

This particular photo, truly evocative of another era, truly warms my heart..... Very Happy
