When these photos were snapped, the old West Shore (NYCRR) Ferry had been gone 13 years; SURFACE, of course, was now MaBSTOA.......

But so, too, was Fifth Avenue Coach Lines (which, up to 1962, operated #16 via its "NYCO Division").

W.B.:

By the time that the DAY LINE (then operated by CIRCLE LINE) faded into oblivion, only the CIRCLE LINE remained at the foot of W. 42nd St.; the NYCRR ferry to Weehawken was long forgotten, and, the DAY LINE, with its new "motor vessel", the diesel-powered "DAYLINER" remained, for a time, as a fading vestige of another era.

When the CIRCLE LINE purchased the DAY LINE in 1962, the steamer PETER SUYVESENT" had been retired; this meant that the veteran sidewheeler "ALEXANDER HAMILITON" was the only ex-DAY LINE vessel operated by CIRCLE LINE.

With the waterfront then in steady decline, fewer bus passengers were traveling to (or boarding) at the W. 42nd St. end of the line......

On the previous page, I posted a link to a photo of #8852 at St. George, in 1973; any clue as to the odd "display" on the rear offside roller curtain?

Another thing I noticed, in going through numerous "batwing" photos (both MaBSTOA and "Tee-Yay") that there were many buses that were operating with blank rear signs (both sides), especially as th 70's progressed; too, a number of photos show buses with empty rear sign boxes.

Was this a sort of a prelude, if you will, to the general falling out of favor regarding the batwing signs?

I'm wondering if some drivers disliked the added chore of setting two additional sign boxes.......

As I said, very few add-ons to batwinged roll signs were effected in 1974. Again, I counted only two - one for the M41 Culture Loop, the other for the Waterside branch of M16. But they seemed to be inserted into existing roll signs, no new roll signs struck up.

But yeah, the absence of roll signs (or in some cases, only showing the top or bottom 'blank' part of same) as the '70's wore on, did seem a forerunner of abandoning that whole concept and extending ads to that area.
