Regarding the "Tee-Yay" and MaBSTOA:
I've always wondered why when the "Em-Tee-Yay" took the helm, why the "OA" insignias were replaced by the new MTA medallions on the buses.
Technically, it was STILL MaBSTOA, so, IMHO, the old stylized "OA" insignias should not have had to be replaced with the new MTA logos.
After the MTA took over, it (IMHO) absorbed MaBSTOA into its "umbrella", and destroyed its separate identity.
Personally, I've always thought that the MaBSTOA era OFFICIALLY ended (at least, appearance-wide) when the last bus displaying the MaBSTOA script was either repainted or retired.
Just my 2 1/2 cents worth.......

Park Row & Beekman, 1970.
Here, Fishbowl #5354, though sporting a new "M" medallion, still carries the familiar MaBSTOA script above the windows (the Fishbowl parked just behind is still carrying its original "OA" emblem)......

Broadway & 230th St., 1981* (A magnifying glass is again needed, in this instance!)

*Also of interest: Note that #6863's side numbers have not been all-too-carefully applied!
Also, note the missing front panel from the nearside batwing......

And, on the 101A sign, no dash between '147 ST' and 'LENOX AVE'. |

And to think when these were first put into service, all of this set of 'batwings' were concentrated among four of the five depots (excepting 12th Street) in Manhattan, while all of 'da Bronx' got the non-batwings in this lot. |

1071? I know 50 years seems like 950 years in terms of the time passed, but . . .
Still, that side sign seems to be "of that time," i.e. 1964. |

W.B,:
First of all, WELCOME BACK (your always factual and in-depth input and commentaries have been greatly missed!)
Awhile ago, we were discussing the "Tee-Yay" and "Em-Tee-Yay" putting its newer equipment on the more "prestigious" routes, while relegated the oldest buses to the more "lowly" lines.
The "batwing" buses, indeed, must have looked quite "hip" and startingly modern when they first entered service, especially when compared to the old workhorses (Old Looks and MACKS)
Indeed, looking at older photos, the batwing buses indeed DID seem out-of-place in some areas, especially when new.
Ironically, in the last few years of "batwings", many buses, as we have seen. were becoming quite raffish, with missing ad panels, etc.
IMHO, the "golden" era of the batwings was beginning to wane when the rear door signs fell out of use, and ad panels now covering the space once occupied by the roller sign box.
Indeed, a sign of things to come........
