"A THOUSAND CLOWNS" (1965)

Just got a dvd copy of this classic "all shot in 'Noo Yawk' " comedy yesterday, starring one of my all-time favorite actors, Jason Robards.

To see the "Noo Yawk" of nearly 60 years ago is indeed bittersweet for Your's Truly; so much I recall from my frequent childhood jaunts into the city.

You could actually tell the difference between the MEN and THE WOMEN back then, and EVERYONE was well-groomed AND well-dressed (a FAR cry from 2024, for sure!)

The rush-hour scenes during the film's opening credits (indeed a time warp) are indeed a true treasure trove for bus historians ("Shemans" pretty well dominated!)

Some of the "Shermans" seen:

#2629 (the ORIGINAL!) Very Happy

#4236

#4248

There was also a quick glimpse of a Fishbowl (near GCT) signed for the #104.

And, the great Mr. Robards himself is seen stepping off "Tee-Yay" Fishbowl #3701, signed:

"1 TO GRAND STREET"

Other scenes have buses seen in the background........ahhh, if only we could go back in time...... Rolling Eyes

Repainted, of course. When it was first put into service in late 1958, it would have been branded 'FIFTH AVENUE COACH LINES INC.' with the green/cream paint scheme - and the particular design they had especially around the standee windows on the exterior.

At the time, 3601-3749 were all stored at the "Tee-Yay's" Manhattan Bus Division depot at 126th Street and Second Avenue. No doubt the "suits" considered the Fishbowls' (not only these "Bullets," but earlier "Jetsons" within the 500's) elegant sleek look more in league with "tony" Manhattan than the then-new first order of "Dangerfields" that were confined solely to the more working-class Brooklyn. You would think at the outset a few of each order would have been swapped for at least a short spell to see how the "Dangerfields" would have handled the Manhattan streets.

The "1" on that bus, incidentally, was the Madison-Chambers route (ex-Comprehensive Omnibus) that, in 1974, was renumbered M22. (Although today, the M1 Fifth-Madison bus terminates as far south as Grand Street and Broadway.)

W.B.:

As always, appreciate the info.

Funny (I was just thinking about this earlier) how in the opening credit rush hour montages in "A THOUSAND CLOWNS" there wasn't so much as even a quick glimpse of a "Patton"..............

And here, from the 1959 Hitchcock classic "NORTH BY NORTHWEST", we have a certain Mr. Hitchcock attempting to board a 2900-series "Sherman" (note also the highly-unusual street "ash tray")...........

Sounds like they weren't filming on 42d Street . . . that's where the "Pattons" would have been seen on the M-104 . . .

I noticed that was actually from Breakfast At Tiffany's (1961), but . . . 2629 would have had that exact same paint scheme when it started out, before it was repainted in time of its appearance in A Thousand Clowns.
