This 1969 photo (snapped at the Fresh Pond yards; note the old BRT line poles) represents the twilight of two eras in NYCTA history.

Here we have a train of the iconic, soon-to-be-retired "Standards", and, in the left background, a number of retired MACKS, also, sadly, destined for scrap.......... Sad

Four BMT trains in action here! (Myrtle Avenue)

Those legendary "Standards" indeed dominate this bustling scene (just imagine the intoxicating cacophony of steel wheels screeching against the burnished rails, growling traction motors........aaahh, how much we all took for granted!)

Marcy Avenue, back in the days when there was still so much fascinating diversity on the "Noo Yawk" transit scene! Very Happy

Up above on the El, we have a BMT work train; down below, a MACK, two trolley buses, and an Old Look.

"Those were the days my friends, we thought they'd never end......."

Here's an undated photo showing restored "Standard" #2775 up at Shore Line, with an SIRT ME-1 in the background.

The unidentified Old Look on the right could use some TLC..........

["Q12 CITY LINE"]

Except for a few details unique to Queens, Pic #154655 looks almost like 23rd Street and Sixth Avenue in Manhattan (especially the Chase building at far right, almost resembling the building on the NE corner of 23rd and "Avenue of the Americas").

At that scene in recent years, you’d have a difficult time finding any signs in English…😉
Actually, it was even worse about twenty years ago, until the city enforced ordnances requiring minimal English translations on those signs …

traildriver:

A number of years ago, the Sunday edition of the DAILY NEWS had pictures of Flushing over the years.

One photo, from the early 1960's, had well-dressed folks, Old Looks, and English-language signs in profusion.

An early 2000's photo showed a Flushing that I found hard to believe was taken in America; virtually all the signs were in foreign languages.

Someone who only speaks English could easily find themselves hopelessly lost in the area, if they didn't know exactly where they were going.

This is all now making me think of the illustrious William Gibbs McAdoo (Patron Saint of the H&M!); Mr. McAdoo had foreign-language brochures on the H&M and its services distributed to incoming immigrants as their ships entered NY Harbor!

Times indeed change, it would seem...............

Stillwell Avenue, 1977.

In these two views we have Fishbowls on hand; up above, in the first photo, we see a train of soon-to-be-retired prewar IND cars; in the second photo, a train of graffiti-scarred R-27/30's........

Hence a 740 model.

At that time, 'NEW YORK CITY OMNIBUS CORPORATION' was still on the sides, right below the passenger windows; the next year - little over a year after el service along Third Avenue ended and the structure torn down - that same bus would have been relettered with 'FIFTH AVENUE COACH LINES INC.' Those would have been turned into "Snow Fighters" once MaBSTOA took over. This appears to have been kept at the sardine-cramped 12th Street garage.

W.B.:

As always, appreciate your input and historical info. Wink

I always thought that the updated "Old Look" fronts on those old prewar YELLOWS were quite good-looking; such buses would have been right at home with any of the old Hudson County "indy" companies I grew up with, 60-odd years ago, for certain! Very Happy

Quick question:

What SURFACE buses ran under the 3rd Avenue El in Manhattan, after the last TARS cars disappeared?

What route(s) run along 3rd Avenue today?

Thanks.....
