Here are a few photos of the B&QT's Nortons Point line, which utilized both surface and elevated ROW.

Only double-ended cars could run on this line.........

These two old views at Stillwell Avenue are interesting; in the first photo, note the removed BMT track, with a covered wooden walkway crossing the old roadbed.

In the second photo, note the overpass for the Nortons Point cars......

Here's a fascinating (and complex!) late-BRT era postcard of the Stillwell Avenue terminal in its heyday...........

From rails to rubber............

As more and more B&QT streetcar lines were converted over to buses, I have always felt that (at least in some areas) that former private streetcar ROW should have been used as reserved bus "corridors".

Surely, when replacement buses took over from the streetcars which had, previously, enjoyed the privilege of running on private trackage, travel time had to be increased, from "A" to "B", with the buses now having to contend with autos, trucks, and traffic lights.......

It would be interesting to know what alternate (street) routing the replacement buses followed, after the private ROW streetcar trackage seen here was abandoned, with the removal of the streetcars.........

I found the following photos in my collection showing BoT PCC's across the Brooklyn Bridge and at City Hall... Enjoy!

Was each loop a different line?

OUTSTANDING PHOTOS.........WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Shocked Shocked

(thanks for posting here!) Wink

In the second photo you posted (Park Row loops, post-1944) note the old deck roof car; this was a retired car that was towed to Park Row (after the BMT El terminal was torn down) and used as a waiting shelter.

The stationary car had an electric cable connecting to the power lines, to provide power for lighting and heat.

As we know, when the BMT El trains stopped crossing the Bridge in 1944, the streetcars were shifted over to the El tracks (with overhead being re-positioned) to allow for an additional traffic lane in either direction.

The streetcars across the bridge made their last runs in 1950; the BB is today the only major East River crossing that no longer has any sort of public transit using it (rapid transit or buses)

Recall, too, that, until 1942, 2nd Avenue El trains crossed the Queensboro Bridge, and, until 1957, streetcars of the Queensboro Bridge Railway, the very last streetcar line to operate in New York State.....

Here are two rare photos of "shelter car" #3740, at Park Row, post-1944 (note that the car's trolley poles have been removed)..........

This circa late-1930's photo shows a single-ended 6000 series Peter Witt, operating on the original BB streetcar tracks, when the BMT El trains were still crossing the span; note, also, the the heavy steel girderwork for the trolley wires......

Photos of PCC's alongside BMT elevated trains on the Brooklyn Bridge are fairly rare; in this 1942 photo, we have a PCC alongside a BMT train; just two years after this nostalgic photo was snapped, the El trains would be cut back to the Brooklyn side, and the streetcars shifted over to the former El tracks, where they remained until 1950............

Until the late 1940's, several B&QT streetcar routes terminated at the underground station at Delancey Street, via the Willy B.

None of these lines utilized PCC's; when a PCC was seen at Delancey Street, or, crossing the Bridge, that denoted that the car was on a fantrip.......

I can recall only one trip on a PCC on the vehicle roadway adjacent to the el tracks. However the above photo shows the challenge of reconstruction by Frederick Zurmuhlen in 1950 and later. The girder box enclosing the single track was expanded to enclose the new three lanes of traffic. I don't know whether the trackbed was lowered or the roadway raised. I believe that metal grating replaced the asphalt or cobblestone roadway. When the World Trade Center was attacked, there were photos of firetrucks and firemen racing to their destiny. The 1950 reconstruction did create a height limit. The roadway of metal grating may impose a load limit. This may be the reason for no buses on the Brooklyn Bridge.
---
Mr. Zurmuhlen, age 63, died suddenly 1.19.1961. I may have attended his wake at home on Clinton Avenue, Staten Island, as he was a graduate of Manhattan College.
