W.B.:

Here is an interesting "coming and going" photo from 1970 (Brooklyn), snapped at 5th Avenue & 94th St.........

I know we had discussed this quite awhile back, here, but I'm curious as to when the first generation "Tee-Yay" Fishbowls were retired.

If I'm not mistaken, it seemed that they were only in service for a little over a decade or so before they were retired.

This does not sound like a long service life, when compared to how long the RTS stayed in service, and the square-window Old Looks.....

The first group of 'Tee-Yay' Fishbowls (1-190) were retired within 1972-73; a few were placed in parks service, as I seem to recall some pictures floating around therein. Definitely 1973 was when the two groups of 1960 Fishbowls ordered initially for FACL and ST were retired, after the last several years in service on Bronx routes assigned to Kingsbridge depot, and after the newest T6H-5309A's arrived on that and the West Farms property.

I think the next set of TA Fishbowls (500-809) saw retirement within the 1973-74 period, as the 7000 series Flx New Looks were first broken in on 'Tee-Yay' routes. Those first-gens would have been the oldest to see service in Manhattan after the consignment of FACL/ST Fishbowls to the Bronx, and certainly in relation to the 1963-67 MaBSTOA Fishbowls that plied the borough up to the first 20 of the 5309A's being parked at Hudson depot for service on Manhattan routes assigned there starting in early '73. Must've been later in the 1970's when the 1000's ordered in '61 were put to pasture; there were enough 2000's to cover in 1981 for when the infamous Grummans had the first of service "pulls," hence they'd have had the oldest span of service on the streets of NYC.

Actually, the TA Fishbowls 1-190 were retired around 1974. The last of the Old Looks were retired early 1973 with the arrival of Fishbowls 6200-6349. If I'm not mistaken, 501-805 were retired around 1975.

B53:

Greatly appreciate your input; so, the first-generation Fishbowls lasted roughly 15-16 years in service....a pretty decent service record!

If the last Old Looks were retired in 1973, that would have meant that the remaining Old Looks were at least 15 or so years old (last Old Looks purchased by the "Tee-Yay" were the 5106's, which dated back to 1958)

Again, appreciate your input......always most welcome! Wink

Old Look #7014 (TDH-5106) at Utica & Avenue H, 1971.

The proverbial curtain was fast drawing closed on the Old Look era in New York......

Looking at the Flatbush Avenue street sign, looks like they used 6" high type for 'FLATBUSH' and 2" high for 'AV'. Which was how c.1966 signs for Madison Avenue in Manhattan were laid out. I'd date the Flatbush sign to about that same time.

W.B.:

Amazing how many changes there have been to "Noo Yawk" street signs, over the past several decades.

Too, recall the long-ago days when destination signs (buses and subways), station signs, street signs, etc., were all upper case.

The truly classic street signs we older fellows still recall so clearly have long-since disappeared, along with the Old Looks, Fishbowls, "DONT' WALK" signs, and two-light traffic signals.......

A rare photo of a new St. Louis-built Brooklyn trolleybus, riding aboard a C&NW flatcar (note the postwar PCC on the flat car just behind; sadly, no such PCC's ever operated in Brooklyn).....

On this day in 1947*, the last B&QT streetcars departed the Fresh Pond depot; over the years, several lines operated out of this facility, including:

BERGEN ST.

SUMNER-SACKETT

TOMPKINS AVENUE

BROADWAY

FULTON ST.

JAMAICA AVE.

METROPOLITAN AVE.

PUTNAM

*Note: I have read of conflicting dates regarding the closure of this facility to streetcars; some sources report 1949, while others state 1950.

Here are two postwar photos showing double-ended Peter Witts at the depot......

Here's another picture snapped at Fresh Pond, showing new "Bingham" MACK #5582.

These buses entered service in 1950-1951; note here that there are still overhead trolley wires in place.......

Atlantic Avenue, Brooklyn, circa-late 1930's.

Note the "BROOKLYN BUS CORPORATION" bus on the right; any information on this company?
