Note the large sign boxes on these early, single-truck Toronto cars.....

While on the subject of roller signs, the BMT's 1925 "D"-type articulated units were the first rapid transit cars in the nation to utilize roller sign boxes at the unit's ends.

It would not be until the IND opened in 1932, that new rapid transit rolling stock would be equipped with end sign boxes.

Even after the War, most new rapid transit cars (outside of New York's) would use small sign boxes at car ends, such as the 1958 PRR/H&M "K" cars; ditto for new equipment in Philadelphia, Boston, and Chicago.......

Here's a "head-on" view of a train of 1958-vintage PATH "K" cars; note the small roller curtain box; this type of arrangement was also used on postwar rapid transit equipment in other cities, such as Boston and Cleveland......

This gallery features a number of photos of postwar rapid-transit equipment in Cleveland; as can be seen here, the oldest of the postwar cars closely resembles the equipment purchased for use in Boston in the 1950's and early 1960's.......

Small destination signs are depicted here on postwar Toronto and Montreal equipment (note that the red Toronto train is quite similar to the equipment then in use on Moscow's Metro system........

Here are two views of historic and modern-era "Blue Line" trains in Boston.

Note that the 1920's (ex-East Boston Tunnel) cars have no destination signs whatsoever at the car ends (no prewar Boston rapid-transit equipment ever had end signs)

The modern equipment features end signs similar to PATH's "PA" series.....

Historical note:

Brooklyn's trolleybuses pulled down their poles for the last time in 1960.

Boston's Cambridge trolleybus routes lasted until early 2022, 62 years later.

Today, on the East Coast, only Philadelphia now operates trolleybuses.

Public Service's dual-powered ASV's were replaced by diesel buses in 1948, 74 years ago.......

Full circle?

Trolleybuses were, indeed, the ORIGINAL "zero-emissions" bus.

Postwar, however, it was thought that diesel buses were both more flexible and less costly to operate (no overhead wiring, line poles, etc., to maintain)

Of course, no one then was thinking about thelong-term effects of diesel fumes,

It would have been interesting had Brooklyn's remaining trolleybus lines could have survived, at least into the 1970's....or, perhaps even beyond.

Interesting...........

The earliest postwar rapid transit cars to run in Boston were built by St. Louis.

These cars were painted in a subdued (but still stylish) scheme of two-tone gray with a slender orange stripe.

Recall, now, that the earlier 1948/1949 IRT R-12/14s and the 1948/1949 IND R-10s, as delivered, also sported a similar scheme..........

In Brooklyn, the last "standard" (non-PCC) streetcars to run were the 8000-series double-ended Peter Witts; they were retired about 1954.

In Boston, the last "standard" streetcars in operation were the famed "Type 5s", which made their final runs (as rush-hour trippers) in 1958.........

Recalling again B&QT's double-ended "8000"-series, the last "standard" streetcars to run in Brooklyn..........

Here's a timeless (undated) photo showing a group of the venerable 8000's patiently awaiting the next call to duty............
