In the wake of Greyhound's wholesale abandoning of routes, most particulary across Canada, other carrier's have attempted to replace them, albeit piecemeal...

One of the better carrier's doing this, I recently learned, is the Ontario Northland Railway. You can now travel on them all the way from Ottawa to Winnipeg, albeit with a few changes...but good connections....

traildriver:

Interesting link; thanks for sharing here.

I truly feel for folks (especially seniors in the more rural areas), who not only have lost any sort of rail passenger service, but also, either have, or will lose, inter-city bus service.

Look at TRAILWAYS; back in the "CONTINENTAL" days, here was a prestigious company that, IMHO, few ever thought would vanish into the history books.

Today, "TRAILWAYS" is, for most practical purposes, is just a name used by certain "regional" outfits.

Sadly, I can see the day when AMTRAK operates only the NEC services, with anything and everything beyond that simply abandoned.

It's a well-known fact that both CSX and NS have little love for AMTRAK trains; in a complete reversal of what was standard practice in the old days, the private-carrier freights get PRIORITY, while the "tenant" passenger trains are shunted into sidings.

How much we have lost (both on the highways and on the rails) during the past few several decades......
