A horrific moment in the Civil Rights Movement (Anniston, Alabama, 1961)
This chilling photograph still is chilling to view today (see previous post)......

There are a number of historical bus-related photos on this excellent page; also, VERY "in-depth"look at the Freedom Rides themselves, and all the good, courageous folk who participated in them.......

I’m sure that bus fulfils its mission to preserve the history of the Freedom Riders story, but I am wondering about the lineage of that particular bus…whether or not it once was indeed a Greyhound, or some other origin?
Some of its “details” don’t seem “correct”.
Again, for its purpose I suppose that really doesn’t matter…🤷♂️ |

It's funny you mentioned this; I was thinking the same thing, wondering if this 4014 had, indeed, been part of the GREYHOUND fleet, OR, simply a "generic" 4104 that was purchased and restored for this historical "monument".
No matter; the bus (whatever its "family tree" is) indeed, still serving a most important purpose......

While on the subject of the now-iconic 4104........When these sleek coaches were introduced, they found themselves QUITE popular with TRAILWAYS and its affiliated companies.
Recall, also, prior to the 4104, TRAILWAYS was a steady, solid customer of ACF-BRILL (look azt the large number of IC-41's that were operated for many years)
Ironically, ACF-BRILL stopped building buses in 1953, the same year that the 4104 was being introduced to the traveling public.
So attractive and sleek was the 4104 design that, in the mid-1950's, MISSOURI PACIFIC TRAILWAYS rebuilt a number of older PDA-4103's; MISSOURI PACIFIC BUS LINES did the refurbishing work on these buses.
The refurbished buses looked much like a "4104 on steroids", and now sporting the fronts used on the 4103.
These big and impressive coaches later went on to work for CONTINENTAL.......

What the text doesn’t make clear is that the current company is not really a direct descendant of the original of which it takes its name from, except perhaps in spirit…🙂 |
