More "Fallen Flags" at the "Port-of-Authority", back in 1981.
I still remember such now-timeless rush hour scenes QUITE well......

GREYHOUND suburban service.....
We've discussed this before (in several topics) but I have always found the idea of GREYHOUND also providing commuter service quite interesting.
In California, especially, GREYHOUND suburban services were both extensive and commonplace.
GREYHOUND could never have made it in the commuter business, here in the greater NY/NJ area, with so much fierce competition from the plethora of long-established suburban companies operating to and from the "Port-of-Authority"
Today, of course, with most suburban services now operated by NJT, GREYHOUND would STILL find it difficult, if not impossible, to run suburban services out of New York.
Remember, too, into the early/mid-70's, both DE CAMP and SOMERSET also had suburban runs operating out of Newark, in the years before the downtown business area declined......

In 1965, DE CAMP purchased five TDM-5305 transit buses for their Newark-based lines; these buses held down most of the base schedules for several years.
As downtown Newark continued to decline, these buses were sold to RED & TAN in 1974.......

In this timeless portrait from over 40 years back, we see a RED & TAN Fishbowl (w/"sightseeing roof") nearing the Lincoln Tunnel, inbound to the "Port", trailed by a smart-looking COACHWAYS "Buffalo".
Look closely up on the outbound helix, and you will see that SHORTLINE is also represented, in this classic, long-ago, rush hour scene......

At almost the same location ( and the same year as previous photo) we have an inbound MANHATTAN LINES Fishbowl, bound for New York, with a sprinting "Hound" (signed "LOCAL") in hot pursuit.....

Pretty sure that Greyhound was using the “low road” approach to the Lincoln Tunnel because the “high road” (helix) was at a standstill, as it often is, before and even after the exclusive bus lane opened…
I have gone that way many times for that reason. |

I don’t think Greyhound had any desire to get into the commuter business in New York, or anywhere else for that matter. Pacific Greyhound did, I believe to relieve their parent Southern Pacific and its interurban subsidiaries from that burden. As soon as public transit districts were created, to take over, Greyhound gladly washed their hands of it.😉 |

Recall, too, that, until the 1960's, EASTERN CANADIAN GREYHOUND LINES operated suburban service out of London, Ontario (to St. Thomas)
This was a very minor operation, utilizing a small group of TD-4506 and TDM-4515 types.
By 1964, these ECG routes had been sold to a local transit operator.....

In "OLD LOOK BUSES" (McKane/Metler) there is an interesting photo of a 1953 TDH-4509, operated by CROWN COACH COMPANY (Joplin)
The bus is lettered for this company, but also sports a GREYHOUND "running dog" on its flanks.
Interestingly, there is no mention of any GREYHOUND affiliation in the photo caption.....

In the aforemtioned book, "OLD LOOK BUSES', there is a photo of a 1952 TDM-4509 , lettered "88 TRANSIT LINES INC."
The first owner of this bus was "BLUE RIDGE TRANSPORTATION COMPANY".
When this company was sold to "EASTERN GREYHOUND LINES", this bus saw service on some of GREYHOUND's suburban routes.
Eventually, it was purchased by "88 TRANSIT LINES", of Charleroi. Pennsylvania.
The unusual name for this company was the result of its operating on Pennsylvania Highway 88.
Interestingly enough, two GREYHOUND purchased acquired the route in 1962.......

On a bright, sunny day back in 1955, we see a proud-looking "SILVERSIDES" (C-52), heading for Albany, on the busy streets of Boston.
Note, also, the trailing MTA Old Look.......

DOMENICO was another old "Joisey" company I was always interested in; how well I recall the company operating both commuter service and bus tours (I took several DOMENICO package tours over the years, the last in 1993, and always had a ball (FANTASTIC drivers and big, smooth-riding MCI's!)
So sad that this long-established company is now just another "fallen flag".
In happier days, back in 1975 (when Your's Truly was a high-school senior!) we see a DOMENICO Fishbowl on a rainy-day fantrip (note the old telephone exchange displayed on the overhead "CHARTER BUSES" sign!)
It's all so long ago, now......

Check out this 1975 photo of DOMENICO Fishbowl #513, here equipped with a "sedan door"........

Historical note:
In "GREYHOUND SCENICRUISER" (McNally/Rayman) there is a 1971 photo of a SCENICRUISER that had been purchased by DOMENICO (and re-numbered #400) at the Bayonne garage, back in 1971.......
