Good one!
Never saw or heard of that practice before...
Some NJ buses had a "Bus Following" on their destination sign for that purpose... |

Another good one!
I can't tell from the photo...do you think that is the 34th or 50th Street terminal? Wish there were some more interior terminal views... |

I have a very old rollsign section (I have NO idea what bus ever carried this sign) that does read:
"BUS FOLLOWING"
I know Washington DC streetcars, Brooklyn trolleybuses, and some of the postwar TWIN COACH (BoT) buses had lights on the dash that would flash, telling waiting riders that their car/bus was full, and to board the following car/bus......

You and i are thinking alike, here.
I'm not at all sure which terminal this photo was snapped at; what DID catch my eye, though, is that I was reminded of the original "Port-of-Authority", with its clean, functional, modern lines.
Of course, GREYHOUND did not move into the PABT until 1963......

Was quite fortunate indeed to come across this very rare scene of the interior of a SOUTHEASTERN GREYHOUND garage, with several ACF-BRILL IC-41's being serviced......

Now that's a nice shot...a comparison of the classic conventional coaches, with the "new kids on the block" Supercoach.
Reminds me of my first overnight school trip to Washington, DC in the Spring of 1960. My seventh grade homeroom teacher had arranged the three day trip, and he chartered a bus from a smaller local bus company. So on the morning of the trip, we were waiting at the pickup point, and the "hand me down", vintage 1948 ex-Greyhound Silverside showed up.
Our teacher did his due diligence, and went over the coach documentation with the driver. Alas, he discovered there was no insurance document. So the driver headed back to the garage, not to return until an hour and a half later. This time with a 1939 vintage Supercoach, probably a '743'?
Looking back, that was probably the oldest coach I have ever ridden in, in revenue service, not counting some museum coaches. Would have been great to ride one of the conventional's, but they were all gone by 1960, as far as I know... |

Though I never had the chance to ride on a "SILVERSIDES" as a kid, I do certainly recall often seeing them in charter service; I can even recall seeing a few elderly 743's working charters in "Joisey", here and there, back in the early and mid-60's.
Back in the day, the 743 could also be seen in any of a number of "classic era" animated theatrical cartoons; in fact, in the very first (late 1940's) Warner Brothers "Road Runner" cartoon ("FAST AND FURRY-OUS"), the VERY first vehicle to clobber poor ol' Wile E. Coyote is a 743, with the ever-smiling Road Runner reclining at the rear windows!

In a late 1940's "Little Lulu" cartoon, "The Dog Show-off" we see a parade of dogs who resemble their owners; the last dog in line is a greyhound, and, at the end of her leash, a SILVERSIDES!!!
This classic "Hound spoof" can also be found on youtube.....

Just came across this INCREDIBLE page on the rare FITZJOHN.....
https://myntransportblog.wordpress.com/2013/12/13/buses-and-more-fitzjohn-dittmar-muskegon-michigan-usa/
Fantastic collection of rare old photos, ads, etc (transit buses, highway coaches, sightseeing buses, and more!)
Be sure to note the photos of the handsome and sleek "Road Runner" ("QUEEN CITY TRAILWAYS"/"SOUTHERN STAGES"); it's obvious that some 4104 influence was incorporated here!
Enjoy!

Yeah...those were still prevalent when Greyhound sent me there from Omaha, on temporary assignment in December of 1971... |

When the Supercoach replaced the Yellow "Z", it was easily the most radical change in coach design history, if you don't count the Pickwick Duplexes, which never really made it into mass production.
The design of the Supercoach is still, basically what we have today, some 86 years later! |
