As TARS never saw so much as a "demo" PCC, cars such as these were the most modern in the fleet; their overall design hints at Peter Witts.......

Staten Island had the distinction of being the first of the boroughs to replace their streetcars; this ex-Staten Island car (#1203) went to TARS after service on Staten Island ended, and is seen here on the "W" line.......

The last TARS routes operated in Westchester; as can be seen here in this nostalgic view, the areas served by the cars were often quite suburban in nature.

Like the Bronx lines, overhead wires were used.......

In this depressing scene, dating from 1948, ex-Staten Island car #1219 is at the head of a line of cars awaiting the torch.......

After retirement from passenger service, many street railway companies converted their Birneys into work cars; this TARS unit ended its days as a rail-grinder......

(Ex-TARS cars in Brazil.....in COLOR!!)......read on:

As mentioned earlier, a number of ex-TARS cars saw further service in Lima, Peru.

In 1947, 75 more TARS cars went to South America, this time to Brazil.

These cars were modified before entering revenue service there.....

*Here is the companion photo page; it's in Spanish, but the MANY rare color photos are indeed worthy of browsing through; there are, also, as a bonus, quite a few photos of the ex-TARS cars in COLOR on this page!

.....the last TARS streetcars vanished in Manhattan prior to 1950.

In the 1960's, many were still at work "hauling the masses" down in South America; talk about BUILT to LAST!!!!! Wink

Many thanks for the informative link to Don's Depot. I had not realized that all the 550's were sold to San Paulo. On the final night of Broadway service, I sat at the rear motorman's position and played with a sparkling toy as the car headed to 129th Street.
---
I soon learned that the ordinary-looking cars on Tremont Avenue were newer than the 550's.
---
One of the strange things about Broadway service above 72nd Street, where there was a park median, was that passengers boarded and left at the more dangerous traffic side. "Obey the 8-foot law" the sign said. The one-man operation necessitated this awkward flow, even though (Boston style) left-side doors were available.

Joe:

You are most welcome!

I, myself, thought it quite interesting, to say the least, to not only read of ex-TARS cars in operation in South America, but also, to actually SEE them in operation.

It is easy to see that, had TARS streetcars continued to run in New York into the 60's, they'd STILL be able to get the job done! Wink

The 550's* were always favorites of mine, from the many, many photos I have seen of them over the years.

It seems, though, that the convertibles were indeed a tremendous favorite of the rail photographers of that era, and no wonder!

It's interesting that PSNJ, though rostering several series of semis (the last were retired in 1937) never operated any convertibles.

One can only wonder, today in 2020, how many modern New Yorkers have not the slightest clue that an extensive network of conduit streetcar lines were once as commonplace as cracks in the sidewalk......

"NYO"

*Cars of this general type would have been good choices for PSNJ, had they decided to modernize their streetcar fleet in the 1930's, instead of going over to rubber.

Here's a classic TARS scene, echoing the long-ago days of old "Noo Yawk"; here we see #556 in front of the ornate car house at 129th & Amsterdam.

The interlacing conduit tracks further add interest to this long-ago color photo......
