A Newark-bound PRR/PATH "joint service" train collided with a PRR freight near Harrison.
Three of the PRR-owned MP-52 cars were destroyed; sadly, two were killed, and two dozen were injured.
Three of the PATH (H&M) "K" cars replaced the PRR-owned MP-52's, by having PRR cab signal equipment installed.
Remember, only PRR-owned MP-52's could be placed at train ends, as the H&M/PATH-owned "K" cars did not have cab signals.
This also held true for the old "Red McAdoos", which were retired with the arrival of the new cars in 1958........

Remember, also, that, at the time of this tragic accident, the "joint service" PRR/PATH trains only encountered freight trains on their runs through the Meadows, to and from Newark.
Until November, 1961, however, PRR diesel and MU commuter trains out of Exchange Place (Jersey City) also used these rails.........
