Fellows:
Strange that, while commonplace in many other cities, there is no direct rail link (of any sort) either JFK or La Guardia.
Oddly enough, many, many eons ago, you could take actually a B&QT streetcar to La Guardia!
Recall the old "Train To The Plane"?
In actuality, this was "The Train To The Bus To The Plane"!
Few, outside of die-hard CNJ enthusiasts, recall that, until the late 1960's, there was a stop of the CNJ's Perth Amboy Branch (freight only after April, 1967) that served Newark Airport (this was the now-demolished 1953 facility)
Little more than a wooden shelter, this "station" was little used over the years.
Back in New York, to this day, outside of "Airtrain" (from the LIRR at Jamaica) there is still no major rail connection to any of the New York airports.
Back in the days when numerous subway extensions were filling the drawing boards, one might have thought that, at some point, at least one of the subway lines might have been extended to either one or both of the New York airports.
IMHO, I think the closest New York ever got to anything even remotely close to "direct rail service" to an "airport" was when NY AIRWAYS helicopters were still landing atop the PAN AM Building, above Grand Central.
Imagine, if you will, a direct (express) subway service to the two airports from 42nd St./Times Square.
Most certainly (at least in the pre-Covid era) such a link would be heavily used.
But, to this day, there is no direct subway or LIRR service to either JFK or La Guardia, even though, elsewhere, rapid transit/heavy rail links to airports are quite commonplace, here and abroad.........

Just came across this excellent, informative page (w/many interesting photos, here and abroad)*.......
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Airport_rail_link
(*Note many airports served by both rapid transit and heavy rail; New York, sadly, is light-years behind the cities highlighted here) |

Flashback to 1972..........
The Port Authority announced a $650 million to build a rail connection to JFK, and also, extend PATH beyond its Newark terminus out to Newark airport, and then head westwards through suburban communities via CNJ right-of-way.
The proposed PATH extension (which, as mentioned, also would have served Newark Airport) would have followed the ex-PRR main line to Elizabeth, then turn west over CNJ trackage to Plainfield.........
