Gentlemen:

It never ceases to amaze me at just how much of the world no operates true high-speed electric networks, while the well-battered AMTRAK continues to (barely) limp along (the ACELA, it seems, is about as close to "High Speed Rail" as we will ever get in this country.

Overseas, especially in Europe, Asia, and the Orient, high-speed rail networks have been commonplace for many years, and have also expanded and upgraded.

In Japan, the first "true" high-speed services began with the introduction of the Shinkansen "Bullets" that entered service in 1964.

Recall, also, all the fanfare and hoopla when "Chunnel" service began, linking Great Britain to the Continent.

It's always interesting to contemplate such high-speed rail networks here at home; of course, so many factors, to date, have more or less "put the lid" on any serious studies here, let alone the actual building of any sort of dedicated high-speed network.

In this topic, we'll take a look at high-speed systems around the world, highlighting both rolling stock and infrastructure......

In the Orient, high speed passenger rail is indeed taken quite seriously.......

I rode the world's fastest train...the Shanghai to Airport Maglev...431 kph (268 mph). Incredible experience that only lasted 8 minutes for the 19 mile ride.

Another unique thing was the very wide cars...seated up to six abreast.

"CHUNNEL"*........

*Note that proposals for a "channel" tunnel dates as far back as 1802!

traildriver:

A wonderful experience, to be sure!

Again, it DOES make one wonder: "Why can't we do that here?" Rolling Eyes

"MAGLEV" *.......

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maglev

Recall, a scene from the 1951 sci-fi classic, "THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL", where "Klaatu" tells "Helen's" son (who is playing with his LIONEL set), something like this: "I'll tell you about trains with no tracks" ("Maglev" trains on "Klaatu's" home planet, perhaps?) Shocked

*A number of very interesting photos, on this page........

SNCF's "TGV", which began operations in 1981.

Recall, when services began, we thought that the TGV trains were the ultimate in high-tech, high-speed trains?

Hard to believe it's now nearly 40 years ago.......
