Perhaps the most iconic jet of all was the sleek and powerful 707--------------

The 737 MAX variant of this long-flying type has indeed been in the news (unfortunately) quite regularly-the past few years-----------

As I had noted earlier here-several examples of the famed B-17 "Flying Fortress" were still being used to haul cargo in South America-through the 1970s----------

The unique Vickers Viscount propjet of the 1950s was once operated by a number of carriers, both here and abroad; CAPITAL had a number in their fleet, and these planes continued flying well into the 1960s for UNITED, in the post-CAPITAL years (happily-a number of examples of this handsome propjet are preserved today)----------

Note the car card for TWA's "Blue Chip" service, displayed inside this prewar IND car, now sporting new roller curtains for service on the "M" line*................

Further:

At the time that a number of prewar IND cars were being transferred over to the BMT, the original "wide-body Jumbos" the new kids on the block, and were basking proudly in the media spotlight, overwhelming the traveling public with their immense size and their commodious cabins and stylish lounges.

Where have all the years gone?

On EYEWITNESS NEWS yesterday there was some great coverage of the historic Concorde "SST" after being floated back to the INTREPID on the West Side.

It had been in New Jersey for several months, generally getting cosmetic work done (paint, weatherproofing, and the like)

The news report mentioned that it took nearly four hours to float the vintage supersonic airliner from New Jersey to New York.......and, to think, it once took less than THREE HOURS to fly from New York to London! Shocked

Hard to believe that, several decades ago, it took less time to fly from New York to London than it takes many commuters today to finally reach home in the evening, given gridlock and commuter rail/subway delays! Rolling Eyes

How ironic that so many domestic airlines once were "on board" to order the new SST, several decades ago.....and, as it turned out, only two European carriers actually purchased them.

Like the now-gone, sleek CONVAIR 880, the SST* was also quite thirsty, and indeed consumed a lot of fuel.

Then of course, there also were "sonic booms"............(!!)

*I have a few vintage SST toys in my collection, the oldest a tin litho "PAN AM" version....... Wink
