The "FLYING TIGER LINE" was the first regularly-scheduled cargo airline to operate in the United States (Also, enjoy the classic props and jets on this page!)

Being an airline pilot was my "dream job" as a kid...unfortunately, I did not have good enough eyesight to pass an FAA first class physical...I could become a private pilot, but not an airline transport rating. Fortunately, the Commercial driver's licensing requirements were not quite as stringent... |

Back then, we all marveled at how it was now possible to cross the Atlantic in such a brief span of time.....it STILL makes me think, even all these decades later!
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Concorde
(there was even a Japanese tin toy version of a CONCORDE, in classic 1960's TWA livery; made many years ago; I'd certainly love to have one of these in my collection today!) |
I did get to take one flight aboard a Concorde, in 1998 from Heathrow to JFK.
Wonderful experience, that I cherish, along with the souvenir's I received from British Airways.
It just so happens, that Speedbird G-BOAD, the one preserved and on display at the Intrepid Sea, Air, and Space Museum on the Hudson, is the very bird that I flew on! |

Neat! Send one over to my house in Okeechobee! We sure could use it, after all this moisture... |

Today, in most places, the "jetway" rules supreme, and has been used for the past several decades.
Interestingly, a prototype "Air Dock" was tested by UNITED in 1954; in 1958, the first operational jetway ("Aero-Gangplank") was installed at Chicago's O'Hare in 1958........

Here's another cool way to board airliner's, parked at remote hardstands...

Back in the 60's, when you could still see vintage props alongside the sleek, new jets, it HAD to be an exciting time to be wishing to be an airline pilot, one day!
One only has to imagine what a veteran "prop" captain might have experienced, the first time he "took the helm" of a modern jet........."THE FUTURE IS TODAY", for sure!
Too, as we were speaking about driver's seniority with GREYHOUND in my other thread, I wonder, back when "props" were still used on some flights, how long it took for one of the "prop vets" to qualify for a jet.
I know I have read that some veteran pilots simply retired, along with the old piston airliners that they piloted for so many years (talk about "loyalty"!)
Years ago, I bought a fascinating (complex!) book on sale at BORDERS (WTC) "FLYING THE BIG JETS" (Stanley Stewart); I got this 1984 book (reprinted in 1999) on sale for $5.00!
All I can say is, you HAVE to have both a good head on your shoulders and good eyes (well, that strikes me down on both counts!) to be seated in the cockpit.......it boggles my mind to see cockpit photos of old "props" and older jets, but, to see the hi-tech "Starship Enterprise" flight decks of today's jets.......man, today's pilots are handling electronic equipment that would not have even even science fiction, back in the day!

You made me remember reading that, back in the 60's, UNITED operated Caravelles (I liked them!) between Newark and Chicago in some sort of "executive" service; these flights were for men only (the feminists of that era surely did not like this arrangement!)
Recall, as we have also discussed elsewhere, GREYHOUND's "XL"services; the "WALL STREET EXECUTIVE COACH" (NYC-Hartford), that started up in 1971, with Eastern Greyhound Lines' #4241 (Scenicruiser), but that's for another thread......

The sleek CARAVELLE had the distinction of being the world's first jet airliner to be developed for the short/medium range market.
Though a number of airlines around the world operated the CARAVELLE, the only major US airline to use them in regularly scheduled service was UNITED........

NYO-- did you notice that photo and caption about the Caravelle having the nose and cockpit of the DeHavilland Comet? |

traildriver:
Indeed I did!
I am lucky enough to have to have not only a tin litho friction "COMET", but also, a tin friction UNITED Caravelle!
Who knew, that, one day in the distant future, that such inexpensive toys would become historic relics in their own right, depicting airliners that have long since disappeared from the skies........

Whoever thought, back in the day, that the hulking, yet graceful "TriStar" would one day be relegated to airline history?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lockheed_L-1011_Tristar
I was lucky enough to fly to Orlando from Newark aboard a EASTERN "TriStar", back in 1987, on my first trip on a commercial flight (to REALLY savor the moment, as we were taking off from Newark, I listened to the opening theme from "AIRPORT" on my SONY Walkman.......what a thrill!)
I flew back to Newark the following week on a 757, and enjoyed the experience just as much!
As it is with buses (and rail equipment) I cannot fathom how quickly the years fly by, and, what was once commonplace, disappears forever.......

Easily one of the most peculiar passenger-carrying vehicles ever produced, and certainly worthy of inclusion here, as we are, after all, discussing air travel......

Another of my favorite (and classic!) prop-jets was the Vickers VISCOUNT; I well remember the UNITED (ex-CAPITAL) Viscounts at the old Newark Airport, back in the 1960's.........
