Washington and Los Angeles PCCs overseas........
Recall that, after DC TRANSIT replaced its remaining streetcar lines with buses in 1962, a number of cars went overseas.
Some went to Spain; others to Yugoslavia (Sarajevo)
The ones that went to Spain were re-equipped with new doors and bus-style headlights.
The cars that went to Sarajevo retained their original "DC TRANSIT" paint, but had pantographs replacing the trolley poles.
Too, there were the ex-LAMTA PCCS that went to Cairo; these cars were NOT treated well at all, were quite abused., poorly maintained,, and soon were reduced to rolling junkheaps.......what a sad comedown.......

This was ironic since LA's PCC's were always maintained to a high standard, even under LATL and LAMTA. |

Thanks, NYO. Those Kinki Sharyo cars weren't too bad looking other than it looks like they took a beating like the LA PCC's.

Agreed.
As raffish as those cars were, they STILL looked like TRAMS, and NO giant mutated insects!
Interesting how, though a number of foreign tramways used American-style trolley poles., most either used pantographs or bow collectors........

Rode those cars at the museum in the '70's and '80's. Wasn't much of a ride in those days but think they have more trackage now.

Thanks, NYO. They didn't go into Perris back then. They also had a bus "junkyard." I call it that because most everything looked derelict. The only thing I remember clearly was that there was a SF Twin trolley bus. I've seen photos over the years of the railway equipment and the areas where they worked on and stored them but not the buses. Hopefully things have changed by now.

I've seen far too many SAD images of derelict historic buses rusting and rotting away, exposed to the elements, at many a "railway" museum; the LEAST they COULD do is to protect these rare and historical vehicles with tarps.....

Pretty sad. I guess buses just aren't loved by most railway museums and they'd rather spend their limited funds on railway equipment.

I've read in any of a number of rail publications over the years that, especially way back when buses were replacing streetcars across the county, it (literally) was virtual SUICIDE for a traction buff to openly admit to also liking BUSES!!
Me, well, I love OLD buses, OLD trolleys, OLD trains, etc., and ALWAYS will!
According to Mom, I was only several months old when I would get all excited whenever a BUS rolled by! (and this is close to 69 years ago!)

Recalling Baltimore's last two car lines........
By 1960, only two BTC car lines were running; the "8" and the "15".
That these two streetcar lines had not been converted to bus earlier was that these lines carried the heaviest loads in the city, and brought in the most revenue.
Plus, at the time, there was no funding for new buses.
However, this all changed in 1963, when the needed funding became available, and the BTC purchased its first Fishbowls, 101 a/c-equipped TDH-5303s.
These buses were also the first air-conditioned transit buses to run in Baltimore.
By October, 1963, the lat two holdovers from the streetcar era, the "8" and the "15", were converted, thus ending many decades of streetcar service in the Monumental City......

Baltimore, 1980...........

By the time of this photo, the MTA had taken over all bus operations from the old BTC; the last streetcars had already been gone close to 17 years.
The Fishbowl is signed for the "15"; in the right background, note the old streetcar line pole, now being used to support traffic light cables.......
